PEI Eco-Net and PEI Climate Change Hub Plan Annual Youth Workshop and Events

On November 20th, youth from all parts of PEI and the Maritimes will gather at the Kier Gallery in Charlottetown for “Living for the Earth,” a day-long series of workshops and events focusing on Climate Change and Sustainable Living. The day will begin with a meet and greet session, followed by a short presentation about the Climate Change Hub and the One Tonne Challenge by the Hub’s Assistant Co-ordinator, Jinny Greaves, and Hub youth committee member, Melissa Dempsey.

This will be followed by, “Global Citizen vs. Global Consumer,” with Anne Thomson, Education and Public Engagement Co-ordinator of the Falls Brook Centre of New Brunswick. The afternoon will begin with a presentation about the PEI Ark and Bio-shelters by Dr. Katherine Clough, Director of Strategic Planning and Measurement Division of the PEI Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aqua-culture. The afternoon session will end with a presentation about Food Production by Jason Kun, Atlantic Regional Co-ordinator for the Youth Environmental Network. The evening will be devoted to supper anda coffee house featuring the sharing of ideas about Living for the Earth through music, poetry, visual art, comedy, dance or other creative endeavors.

“The workshop promises to be an exciting day of information, networking and fun,” says workshop organizer Jinny Greaves, “ Climate change and sustainable living are important topics and Maritime youth

can provide valuable insights into the issues we all face as our climate changes.” The day-long series of workshops will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 20th, at the Kier Gallery in Charlottetown. Tickets for the “Living For The Earth” Workshop are $10 and include supper. T-shirts will be available for an additional charge. Space is limited, so register early by calling (902) 566- 4170.

A special opening event for the workshop will be held at the UPEI Student Union Building Courtyard on Friday, November 19". “Erin Blanding of the international children’s organization, Free The Children, will give a presentation beginning at 7 p.m.,” notes PEI Climate Change Hub and PEI Eco-Net Co-ordinator, Susan Hawkins. “This will bea chance for all Islanders, of any age, to learn about this excitingintemnational network of children helping children and how they help change the world.” This PEI Eco-Net fund-raising event will be followed by “Dance for a Better World” at 9 p.m. Anexciting evening filled with dancing to music by Gordie Cox, “Dance for a Better World” proceeds will be used to help Free The Children builda school in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Carrying on the topic of crazy people doing dangerous things come the story ofa man who jumped into a lion’s den ata zoo in Taipei. Television footage taped the man as he screamed at lion’s with his hand’s raised, “Jesus will save you! Come bite me !.” His attempts to convert the lions to Christianity were met with mild resistance by one male lion, who decided to maul the man’s leg. Imagine what they would do to a Jehovah’s witness.
