The law passed at the recent session ofthe Louisiana Legislature and ap- proved by Goy. Foster, prohibiting the wearing of hats in theaters and other places of amusement where an admis- sion is charged, went into effect last week, It isstated that the women of Louisiana have bowed gracefully to the decree that they must not obstruct the view of others in theaters by mil- linery monstrosities. When they enter places of public amusement now they quietly and unresistingly remove their hats and receive checks for them. The ladies are content and the men are delighted. ‘‘The simple fact is,” says the “Picayune,” ‘that the Louisiana women are remarkable for thety hoanty of face and for their sweet and obiiging disposition. however, is only efficacious where the windows are double. The cracks be- tween the two window frames and around the edges are kept tightly sealed and several small vessels half

tilied with concentrated sulphuric acid are left in the space between the plates of gli But the simplest and best cure of all for frosting windows is to have a small electric fan playing near it continuously. The air is thus kept in motion, and there is no chance for the frost to settle on the glass.

This reminds us that the Turks, who are mentioned @ccasionally in the newspapers, have a singular manner of regulating drunkenness. Ifa Turk, vertaken with wine, falls downin the street and is arrested by the guard, he is sentenced to the bastinado; this pun- ishment is repeated as far as the third Tense, after which he is regarded as incorrigible and called “imperial Jrunkard,” or “privileged drunkard.” {f he isthen arrested, he has only to name himself, mention his lodging, say he isa “‘privileged drunkard;” he is released and sent to sleep upon the hot ashes of the baths. Thus does Pouque- instruct us. But suppose that the privileged drunkard is suffering from a still or anumb and cannot give his name, address or station? What then? Of what avail , his honorary title?— Boston Journal.
