A Slander Corrected.

T'v the Editor of the Examiner.

Six,—A meeting of the inhabitants of County Line Station and vicinity was held in the schoolroom on Saturday evening, 14th inst., agreeable to a notice posted for that purpose.

The notice calling the meeting was sign- ed by J. W. Hughes, Peter Duffy, and Wm. Haslam, Esq’s., stating that such | meeting was called for the purpose of cor- jrecting certain slanders published in Tue | WkEKLY EXAMINER newspaper, over the | Signature of *‘Malsah,” dated 2ud October, | 1882, said falsehoods circulated for the pur- | pose of throwing discredit on the village and people.

The meeting was organized by the ap- | poiatment of Patrick Duffy, Esq., to the | Chair, and the undersigned Secretary.

The village and adjacent settlements was | |

J. W. Hughes, Esq., first addressed the meeting, beginning by reading the libellous ‘articl signed ‘‘Malsah” and commenting | keenly on such base cowardly falsehoods, ireflecting on, and hbelling the licensed | vendor, and people of ‘his place, as they |did. He (Mr. Hughes) proposed the fol- 'lowing resolution which was seconded by ‘John T. Murphy, Esq., Newton, and car- | ried unanimously :

Whereas, The letter signed ‘ Malsab,” in the Wrexty EXAMINER of 3rd inst., was | both libelous and malicious im its ungrounded allusions to the licensed vendor of this vil- | lage, and the people generally of this locality; and, whereas, it is a well known fact the |verdor of this place is most strict, selling lonly as directed bythe law. Hence, his fit- ' ness to act as vendor here, rather than place the sale of liquors in other hands, as appears

‘te be the desire of ‘* Malsah,” and a few others. Therefore Resolved, That this meeting

i strongly condemns the cowardly and untruth-

ful slanders of ‘‘ Malsah.” The more because

we believe him to be an unworthy member of

a Temperance Division, leagued with a cer-

tain few, with a view that the vendorship may

4 given to another less. strict in observing he provisions of the Scott Act.

Peter Duffy, Esq., next addressed the | meeting. warmly criticising the foul slan- ders of =‘ Malsah,” as just read from THe Examiner of the 3rd inst. He (Mr D»tiy) argued that ‘‘ Malsah’s’” wanton slarders- reflected eqnallyon the well as the vendor, and both without any reason. He congratulated the people on having so strict a vendor, and was pleased to note so becoming a change in use of liquor in this locality. He moved the fol- lowing resolution, which was seconded by Mr. Peter McMahon, and carried without even one nay.

Whereas, It is to be regretted that we have some few persons in our midst whose highest ambition 18 to belie and belittle the place they live in, together with a respectable community for unworthy purposes ; and

Cuartes Leigh (sworn)—Examined b Mr. Davies—I live in Mr. Peake’s bric house, Water Street. I remember the night of the robbery. I was standing talk- ing to the watchman. Carvell leaving the office that night. It was about twenty minutes past eleven. My watch showed about twenty minutes to twelve, but it was fast. This night Carvel’ passed without saying “20 night,” as usual. I thought this singnlar after I heard of the robbery. I-went home about twelve o’clock. I saw no sus- picious characters prowling about. I didn’t see a soul.

Cross-examined by Mr. McLeod—I re- called the time Mr. Carvell passed the fol- lowing evening. I meet him about five

aights out of the seven at from nine to half- pasteleven. Generally he leaves a little a‘ter ten o’clock. T have no stated time to walk on the platform. I am generally about the corner at half-past nine, and might be there any time from eight to twelve o'clock. I meet Livingston every vight. I should not have remembered the time Mr. Carvel] passed on that Thursday night but for hearing of the robbery. | lt is not possible it was twenty minutes to eleven. I saw Mr.Carvell pass. I couldn’t swear that Mr. Carvell heard me when I spoke to him that night. Usually he does and answers. He is usually later on the boat nights.

ArnTuurn Negwsery (sworn)—Examined by Mr. Davics—1 am Assistant Provincial Secretary. I pay the salaries of the Pro- vincial officials. I paid Blatch his monthly salary either on the afternoon of 3lst August, or on the Ist or 2nd September. I paid him $41.66 by cheque. I also a him some money for Dawson. I paid $50 between the 4th and the 9th Septem: ber. I also remember paying two other small cheques—one drawn by Mr. and one by Mr. Mitchell. Kant’s ch was for $7.50—the amount of Mitch cheque I don’t remember.

To Mr. MeLeod—The $50 were due Doirant for his salary as Assistant Clerk of the County Court, Doirant gave an order to Blatch to get the money. The amount Doirant owed the Government was less than the amount drawn by Blatch. I don’t know whether Doirant was dismissed or whether he resigned. I don’t remember paying the small cheque to Blatch ; but I

To Mr. McLeod—We pay per quarters ending the 10th April, 10th July, 10th October and 10th January. I pay in cash,

Freprerick W. Hucues, (recalled), exa- mined by Mr. Davies—Produces the Cash Book. The amount I paid Blatch was $243 00. Blatch repaid me $50 on the 2nd of September last. Returns of County Courts produced. Mr. Blatch accounted to the Government on the 4th of May, 1882, and the 16th of October, 1882— (paper produced.) This is a return for the Town Circuit (of which Mr. Blatch is Clerk) and the money was puid on the 4th of May, the amount paid was $111.36. Blatch has made a return for hia cireuit since the 27th of December, 1881. He re- turned $179.00 on the 16th of October. This was for fees received up to the 27th of March, 1882. The $1721 paid Biatch was made up of Government fees and money paid in by suitors.
