Men's Intramurals this week saw plenty of rain and hard-hitting as tackle football started. The Marian Hall team went undefeated in the first week of play.

The first games saw the Marian Hall team defeat the Selects by a thrilling 13—12 score. This game was called the "Battle of the Rumming Backs" because of the many big runs which made the game interesting. A fumble recovery by the astounding Marion defense set up their first touchdown. Actually , the big play here was the piling on penalty called ' when we had them back to third abd goal. The Selects came roaring back

with an excellent run back by Brian Thompson. Brian grabbed a punt

and took it 55 yards downfield for the T.D. Converts on both touch- downs were no good. That was the score at the half. In the second half a sweep rum by Neil Connaughton put the Selects in the lead for the first time but we missed the two point conversion. The missed conversion proved to be fatal as the Marian team started using their running backs Socky and Rob MacDonald. The big run here was the sweep whcih broke loose for 30 yards. But unlike the Selects Marion converted their T.D. and also for the game. It was an

excellent game and all players, whether winners

7 or losers, enjoyed/it.

In game 2 of the intramurals football league, the Selects

,captured the first victory of the‘youn season with a

defensive 3-0 win over M&M. This game featured great defensive work work and horrible offensive work. This win was fated for. teh Selects‘as their running back Brian Thompson got hurt on

a sweep and might be

lost for the season. He will certainly be missed. The only scores of the game were a 2 point safety and a touchdown. This game also featured the welcoming of Roger "Jack— o-lantern" Riggs. Roger was just waking up from

Fate Not Always Kind

Although we resolved, during the baseball strike, that we would drop all interest in the sport we believe our intentions have been wiped out by the Expo success. We may point out to those interested that the BEST place to watch the games (hOpefully the World Series) is in the Panther Lounge where a big screen television has been installed and there you can join your friends to cheer the success of your favourites or bewail a loss. We thought, briefly, of watching the field hockey game last week as Mount A. visited the campus for an important game but put off temptation due to inclement weather. In what must have seemed more suitable conditions for water polo the girls drOpped a squeeker 2—0 with the last marker coming late as our team pressed for a tie. This was an unfortunate one to lose as this is the team

we must beat out to make the playoffs. Coach Mullally claims her charges play better against adversity and hope for wins against Acadia Friday and Mount A. next Wednesday. Both are "Away" games.

In soccer the news is good, bad, and puzzling. We'll give the good news first. We took on #1 ranked Dalhousie last Saturday and won a clear victory 2-0. The first half was scoreless but with the Panthers having territorial advantage. Early in the second Andy Cameron set up Gary Polenz for a play in which the Dal goalkeeper. was helpless and a few moments later Gary MacDonald again dented the twine and we won 2—0. This was the third successive shutout for Peter MacDonald. On Sunday; with visions of a #1 rating dancing in the heads of Panther rooters, we played the then unranked Saint Mary's team. SMU have about five swarthy little characters, lookalikes with thin mustaches, all of whom can run like deer and score like Wayne Gretzky. By the time our boys started to know how to stOp them we were behind 3—0 and our cause seemed hopeless. However, Andy Cameron got one on a pass from Scott Neill and Gary Polinz got two and we were all even! Unfortunately , fate isn ' t

always kind and SNU's little beavers got three more and although Polenz got another we lost 6-4. We must comment that is ‘ was a wildly exciting- garre and, this time,

the spectators (encouraging in their increased numbers) shouted and applauded throughout. Some basketballers livened things up considerably with their extraordinary antics. If they play like they spectate the gym won't be big enough and Coach

As for 'Sunday's game Commissione Vince and I inspected the field after the game and there were pumpkin seeds all over" the field. Vince said it was all right because UPEI needs a pumpkin patch and Roger could be the Great Pumpkin. But Vince said that Roger should watch out for his head because with ‘Eharksgiving and Halloween coming up there is a high demand for ' pumpkins.
