HEATHERDALE MEETING

Healtherdale School Hall will be the place for an Agricultural Meeting on next Thursday, De~ cember 18th. The programme will get underway with Mr. H a r old Heartz, Federal Livestock Grad- er, discussing market weights and carcass grading of livestock. Mr. Heartz has spent many years in this field and is recognized as one of the leading authorities in Eas- tern Canada. He has many val- ualble tips to offer livestock pro- ducel‘s. Livestock Feeding which is one of the most important phases of any farming programme, will be discussed by the Director of Field Work for the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture, Mr. S. Dav-id Pea- cock. This will present an oppor- tunity to examine some of the effective methods in feeding and developing stock. This meeting is being organiz- ed and will be conducted by Da- vid MacLean the Kings County Agricultural Represen-tatiive. .At the conclusion of the meeting he will show a film entitled “Why Grow Fat Hogs". Mr, MacLean states that all those who are in- terested in increased returns from livestock production should make an effort to attend the meeting. THE FREEZING COLD

Football fans bundle up warm and tote along an extra blanket to keep from freezing. Milk and cream, if not transported in an insulated van, can stand some ooddling too! Cover earns with a blanket or heavy tarpaulln. Un- protected metal containers con- duct the cold and if left outdoors for long periods of time in win- ter their content readily freezes. Try to make it a point never to leave shipments of cream on plat- forms in freezing temperatures for over half an hour.

Frozen milk or cream is very undesirable because when it un- dergoes this physical change the water separates from the protein and never reunites in the same smooth homogeneous way after- wards. This makes correct samp- ling practicall-ly impossible. Such products suffer a loss of quality and a mealy or rough taste can be detected. _

Frozen milk or cream also caus- es delay in processing dairy pro- ducts and at some erearmerles it may hold up the farmer's pay cheque.

Consider purpose, color and cost equally when buying a rug. A wool one usually ranges from $7.95 to $21.95 3 sq. 'ylard. From it you can expect excellent ser- vice. very good resistance to crushing, much warmth, and easy cleaning . A good quality wool carpet is economical in the a long run.

Nylon rugs, though starting at higher price, have remarkable wearing qualities with excellent recovery from crushing. Dirt is easily removed and water solu- ble stains are not absorbed. Ny- lon rugs are color fast to light and washing.

Saran, a synthetic fibre, can stand prolonged wear but gives only satisfactory crush resistance. Rugs constructed of this non-por- ous fiber, resist spotting yet if cleaning is necessary the color fastness of the material will per- mit the use of soap and water.

Pile density is more important than fiber length when rug buy- ing. The best quality Wilton or Axminster has 123 tufts per sq. inch; velvet, 80 and Chenille a- bout 140. Protect these rugs with a rug cushion.

The Bridgetown and Districts 4-H Calf Club,met on December 8th. 1958, at the home of Grover MacKay. The president called the meeting to order and the members repeated together the 4-H Club Pledge. Roll call was answered by 11 members.

Question sheets were passed around to the members by the secretary, also a book on Conser- vation of Wildlife. The prize money for the Achievement Day and Rural Youth Fair was a. warded to the members.

Next meeting is to be held at the home of Raymond Acorn on January 23rd. It was moved by Larry Acorn and seconded by Garth Taylor that the meeting be adjourned. A delicious lunch was served by the hostess. Jean MacKay. Secretary.

4<H Triple M Calf Club met. at Marie School on December lst, 1958. The meeting was called to order by the president, Ken- neth Dunn and the members re- peated the 4-H Club Pledge. Four- teen members, one visitor and the club leader were present.

The club leader asked the members to bring in their soil samples as soon as possible. Pat- sy Peters gave a I‘BPOI’I on the activities of the Rural Youth Fair. ‘.

Booklets on the conservation of wildlife were passed out to the members by the club leader. He also reported that he was un- able to attend the 4-H Club ‘Lea- der's rally.

Helene Din-giwell was appointed to ask James Gunn of the St. Peters Lake Garden Club, to give us a report of his trip to the Royal Winter Fair for our next meeting. Parents, are to be in- vited to this meeting.

Blair Webster and Kenneth Dunn are to be the speakers for our public speaking contest. it was moved and seconded that Patsy Peters and l'lclenc Din:- will be on lunch committee Im‘ the next. meeting. Blair Webster and Lawrence Peters are to be on the recreation committee.

The prize money for the years work was then given to mem- bers. Collection amounted to 80 cents. it was moved by Preston Coffin and seconded by B i a i r Webster that the meeting be ad- journed.
