The Gaulvis pro- feases to publish for the first time a letter written by Napoleon to Josephine, explain- ing how i came to pass that the prince was not summarily disposed of by a firing paris after his capture. The following is a trans- lation of this letter, which, apart from the incidents of war, to which it relates, is in teresting as a concise statement of Napoleon’s views on the subject of women : ‘‘L received your letter wherein you appeared vexed, dear friend, at the ‘bac things | say of women. I hate intriguing women beyond expression. [ am accus- temed to good, gentle,and confiding womem, These I love; and if they have spoiled me it is not my fault, it is yours. Now yon will see that [ have been kind to one who showed that she was a good woman -a woman of feeling—-Mme. de Hatzfeld When I showed her her husband's letter she said to me simply, yet with dee; emotion, subbing at the time: * Ah, it is indeed his writing.’ The admission tonch ed mysoul.
