I tried to see what effect this reply of her’s would have on Harry, but he was shrewd enough to see my intention, and to keep his face turned away.
We all entered the house in silence, and found Mrs. Ellis fluttering about in @ great state of anxiety as to what had become of us. Mr. Jones had sent again and again to ask where we had gone, and whether we had returned, she said. At these words Harry turned round,
‘I must see my father,’’ ho sald.
“‘} think you had better not to-night, if yon have anything of an exciting na- ture to impart to him,”’ said Mrs. Ellis, noticing the expression of the young man’s face.
“T bave to ask his advice on a very important matter, that’s all. But I must see him. Which room ts he in?’’
He was walking toward the stairs. Mrs. Elite directed him with evident re- luctance.
I tried to calm her fears by assuring her that Harry was by no means the silly young man she thought him, but I myself felt uneasy, remembering the manner in which the ocourrences of the day befors had preyed upon the hard- worked lawyer.
Harry was in his father’s room by this time. I went upstirs to take my hat off. I was two rooms away, but all the win- dows were open, and in a few moments I caught tones of passionate excitement issuing from the apartment where father and son were conversing. Suspense made my ears sharp.
Withont trying, though scarcely with- out wishing to hear, I presently caught fragments of speech. Both speakers were greatly excited, sometimes to the point of speaking at the same time.
The father’s tone was that of reproach, that of the son was alternately sullen and entreating.
‘My son, my own son! How could I expect it of you!"’ sald Mr. Jones’ voice.
And there followed a heated discussion throughout which both volces sank lower. It was Harry whose words I caught next, spoken in a tone of passion.
‘““What’s the use of wasting time in talk? It’s all found out; or what is not known yet may be at any minute. You don’t suppose that woman would keep a man’s counsel a minute longer than suits her purpose? We had better go abroad, the whole lot; we’re done for here.’’
His voice had gradually risen 60 high that every word of his speech came to me quite clearly. Ashamed of playing eavesdropper, I now rose quickly, when I heard Mr. Jones, with sharp reproof to his gon, for his impudence, close his window. As I opened my door that of Mr. Jones’ room was flung open, and Harry appeared. He guessed that I had overheard something, but with a keen glance he withdrew again into his father’s apartment, saying, simply:—

Down stairs I found Alice pretending to read in order to avold the questions of Mrs. Ellis, who was exceedingly hurt because nobody took her into their con- fidence regarding the interesting things which she felt were going on around her. Asa consequence she was exceedingly dignified that evening, and we were forced to hear more than usual about that ‘“‘charming man, Lord Brooks.”’ After a miserable twenty minutes dur- ing which Mrs. Ellis tried to snub me, and in vain tried to rouse Alice's atten- tion, I heard Harry’s foosteps on the stairs, and thoughtlessly sprang to my feet. Mrs. Ellis gave an icy little laugh.

Curling the Hair.
Curling is a process which should be undertaken most carefully. Heating with irons should be avoided as much as possible. When using them give yourself plenty of time. The hasty use of overheated irons is the cause of many short, fuzzy-looking fringes ono sees. The best plan for curling the hair is toput it into curling pins over night, as the constant use of irons causes the hair to wither and snap.
It is not desirable to use curling fluids. but as it is sometimes very difficult to keep the hair in curl, es- pecially in summer, when the forehead is apt to get damp with perspiration, it may be useful to know of the following simple preparation: Mix ten or twelve grains of carbonate of potash with a pint or more of warm soap and water. Froth the water by brisk agitation. Then dip the brush into this solution and moisten the hair with it before curling at night
