Montague Driving - Club Ice Races

A fast afternoon's racing was put on by the Montague Driving Club cn the ice speedway, on Wednesday March 4th. about 1.000 spectators with a. good percentage of the ia- dies interested, mal close finishes were the order of the day with every one on thlr toes, and every driver teaming hard for first place.

Class A brought out four, start- ers, the great little pacer Billie Cope owned by Jame; Lannon, had to tramp fast to win the 3 straight heats with Leo Collins teaming. Dr. Preston McIntyre’: pacer Billie Witte, with Alfred Lowery driving as he usua‘ly does. Johnnie Miles with his owner James Murphy up. Billie and Johnnie made the Cope horse know that he was in a race. These two horses were right up in place at the wire. Alex Campbell's good pacer Balbo was a starter and was very fast; in the first heat Balbc grabbed his quart- er boot and fe'l but was not serloucly injured due to the good judgment of Alex McLeod who was pfoting him. Balbo was drawn, this left the three old warriors to battle it out.

Class B had the racing fans in the air, Cass Clay's, Peter Verd with Lowery up, and that good little pacing mare Tote with her owner Hurd Killarn driving. made the rac- ing of the day.

Peter trotting all the way and Tote pacing fast, made a great race with the mare right on the neck of Peter at the finish of the three straight heats. Ed R. was out in the first heat and then drawn.

Mr. Bennett came all the way up from Murray River with his good mare Jollyset, which shows he has the right sporting spirit. Jollyset was right up in the fast company in the first heat, but lost a shoe and had to be drawn and left the fight to Peter Verd and Tote.

The Race Committee are anxious to have this pair get together at meeting on Wednesday March ll.

S.D.U. Wins Wollner Trophy-Defeat ' P. W. (l. 6-3

Thursday afternoon at the Forum, S. D. U. for the first time became possessor of the W. W. Wellncr Trophy.

A week ago the Saints won the first game of a two-out-of-three- game series at the college rink, 6-4.

The score yesterday about indica- ted the pfay. At the end of the first period, S. D. U. led 3-0. P. W. C. knotted the count in tho second period, 3-3. At the half-way mark of the third period, the Saints again took the lead by a gift goal-a P. W. C. player batting the disc into his own net. Before the end, how- ever, the Saints rattled the twine behind Jordan twice to salt away this game and incidentally the tro- P Y.

R. Beaudet, hefty and brilliant defense man, was the pick of the Saints, scoring two goals, closely followed by C. Trainer, who scored three. For P. W. 0., Vince Grant was the big gun both on attack and defence. Both goalies, Jordan for P. W. 0., and Butler for B. D. U., stopped well. The latter stopped V. Grant several times when the tricky defense man broke through.

The Bhediao hockey mm added the P. E. Island intermediate title to their New Brunswick champion- ship last night when they defeated Borden Nationals at Borden 4-2 to overcome the goal lead which the Nate had garnered in the first

game.

Shediac had to wage a stiff up- hill battle. mtering the final game of goals-tc-oount series, one point down and on strange ice, the main- landers chances of victory against the speedy Nationals seemed re- mote.

The match started slowly with Borden content to protect their ad- vantage carried over from the first battle. But the homesters waiting tactics proved to be their downfall.

Shediac counted early in the first period tying the series score and Borden snatched two goals in the second session then fell back on the defense again.

In the hot third period, the New Brunswick team outskated their speedy opponents, flashing dazzling speed. Their first count came af- ter little more than a. minute of play, but- Nationals were able to hold them off until just a few minutes before the end of the game.

The Prince Edward Island cham- pions remained in the lead until the 14-minute mark when Robid- nux drove home a hard shot to tie the count_ ma: than two minutu later, tho snappy front line went through again and this time the count came from thc stick of Al- bert Hebért. It was Albert's second goal of the match. Brother Alyne counted the first goal of the final period.
