Great Britain’s Position.

The British Empire presents a singu- larly interesting field for students of politi- cal economy, and no part of it wore su than the Mother country itself. The London Times has been collecting statistics of the material progress of the United Kingdom, It find® the public wealth has increased 30 per cent. in ten years, and in closing a very carefully prepared comparative state- ment says :

‘* Summing up the condition of the United Kingdon at present,-as compared with ten years ago, we have every reason to be proud of the progress we have made. If we had only increased wealth, manufactures, com- merce, avd public instruction in the same ratio as the number of inhabitants—namely, Li per cent.—we should present to the world a very savorable balance-sheet of our affairs in tue past decade, But it is manifest that we have grown iu prosperity much more than in population, and that evely succeeding de- cade, in spite of an oceasional crisis or re- verse, sees Great britain richer, wiser, and happier, thanks to the imdustrial and eivic virtues of her people, ’

It will be born in mind that this great progress has been made in the face ot an increased opposition. During the last ten years we have been told again and again that the commercial supremacy of England was departing from her, aud great things have been foretold of her rivais. But now a careful retrospect shows au unprecedent- ed advance on the part of the United Kingdom in all the elements of national prosperity. ‘The reason of this is probably that that the markets of the world are every day widening, and there has been a great advance in the manner of living in all civilized countries. The luxuries of one decade are the necessaries of the next, and as knowledge increases and becomes more and more wisely directed, the result will be the accumulation of wealth, or in other words, of the valuable products of labor. Sv far from having reached the acme of ‘civilization, the human race has. in all likelihood only as yet had glimpses of the ‘great things it will achieve, and of the high | Stage of progress it will reach.
