According to a statement j st issued from Washington, the foreign trade of the United States for the fiscal year ending | 30th of Tune last was as follows: Imports, | $831,.734.421; exports, $1,025, 964,485 ; | total, 81,857,698, 906 per head. In Canada, during ‘ period, the foreign trade amounted to $43 pe. head.

The report of the committee of the Im- perial Federation League, proposing & scheme for the defence of the United King-

dom and the Pritish Colonies, will be sub- mitted to the council of the League mm November. After approval of this scheme

Mr. Gladstone will be asked to summon 4 conference of colonial statesmen to discuss the scheme with representatives of the lm- perial Government.

—According to immigration returns is- sued by the British board of trade the num- ber of immigrants leaving the United Kingdom for Canada during the six months ending 30th June last was 23,569 against 16,0563 during the same period of 1891. According to nvtionalities they re classified as follows: English, 10,338; Scotch, 1,263; Irish, 727. other nationali- ties, 11,241.

~According to recent statistics, says the Glasgow Mail, the chances of a railway ac- cident are slight after all. In 52,000,000 , "neys only one person was killed, and in 1,930,935 journeys only one person was iujured. Supposing the average length of a journey to be half an hour, that makes 3,000 years of travelling, day and night, before it comes to be one’s turn to be kill- ed, and about 100 years before a minor ac- cident should occur.

—The United States Bureau of Statistics has issued a statement showing the values of imports and exports of the United States for the month of July, 1892 and 1891, and tor the twelve months ending July 31, 1892 and 1891. The total exports for July last were $58,355,230; imports, $71,373,180; excess of imports, $13,017,950 In July, 1891, the imports exceeded the exports by $4,373,142. The exports for the twelve months ended July 31 last were $1.025,- 964,485, and the imports were $831,734,- 421, making an excess of exportsof $194,- 230,064. For the twelve months ended July 31, 1891, the figures were: Exports, $892,704,871 ; imports, $834,398,927 ; ex- cass of exports, $08,306.944

—Ottawa Citizen :—Now that our neigh- bors over the way seem disposed to make the most of their possession of the only waterway into Lake Superior, would it not be worth the governmeat’s while to make an effort to hasten the completion of our own **Soo” canal? The contract calls for the finishing of that work up to the close of the season of navigation in 1894 ; but sure- ly if the incentive were forthcoming, the contractors could be induced to hurry on the work. Certain itis the ownership of an independent water route would give us the whip-hand in any negotiations with the United States looking to the arrangement of our international traffic relations. That ia an advantage that cannot well be under- estimated. We have heard no opinions of engineers upon the sudject; but it doesnot seem unreasonable to conclude that by doubling the constructive forces at work there are at present the canal might pretty well be rushed through to completion this winter. If so, the scheme is one that ought to be. considered without loss of time. Under the circumstances, parlia- ment would be sure to see the matter in the light of a national necessity and the eredit to carry on the work would be read- ily enough voted.

— The New York Sun plainly advises President Harrison to ** put the screws to the Canadian Tories ;” to ‘* deal a death- blow to the Canadian Pacific and Grand Trunk Railways,” and to play old Harry generally with this country, in order ** not only to bring the Tory Ministers at Ottawa to their knees, but give a tremendous im- petus to the movement for the political fusion of Canada with the United States.” Long ago the gentleman who advised put- ting on the screws as a sure means of bringing about annexation has been re- pudiated and cast out from the Liberal Party ia whose pay he happened to be at the time he gave that traitorous advise. Nor will ‘our Liberal friends much thank the venerable anglo- phobe of the Sun for this: ‘*The American pecple,” says the paper, ‘“‘want no com- promises and no conferences with the Tory wirepullers, who just now to the grave detriment of our liberal friends in Canada, happen to be in power at Ottawa.” Nor yet have we any cause of apprehension of danger to our national dignity from the other source to which the Sun looks for aid to its humiliation policy Swhen it says : **Now that Mr. Gladstone has returned to power in England, the time has come to make the representatives of Canadian rail- ways and all other Canadian interests un- derstand that, if they covet the privileges of American citizens, they must seek them within the Union, and not outside of it.”

AN INSANE MAN STOPS HER MAJESTY’S CAR- RIAGE.

The London Globe reports an incident that occurred to the Queen while she was driving near Osborn House, Isle of Wight, recently. Asthe royal carriage was pro- cveding along the road a man making vio- len. gestures advanced towards it. The carriage was stopped and the man ap- proached the Queen. He told her that he was 4 foreign count, and that he and many others had sworn that if the Queen did not resign they would kill her.

Her Majesty's listened in silence to the wild harangue, never once betraying any nervousness. She and her attendants at mace saw that tlle man was mentally unbal- anced, and though she did not know but what he would attempt to suit his actions to his words, she retained her presence of mind and gazed calmly at him, never ut- tering a word. One of her attendants dis- mounted, and quietly talking to the man removed him from Her Majesty's presence. He was handed over to a constable and lodged in jail. There is no doubt that he is insane.

Baptist Convention.

Bripgetewn, N.S., Aug.22,—The report of the home missionary board shows that two general missionaries have been at work all the year. Of the 66 fields counted as mis<ion at the beginniog of the year 37 have had contin- uous ministerial labor for all or pearly all the year. With one or two exceptions the ré- mainder have had some attention, either by general missionaries or student supplies. The reports received show 2,171 weeks of labor, 246 stations occupied,5,912 sermons preached, 4,595 other meetings held, 12,196 pages of cracts distributed, 16,089 religious visits 724 baptized, and 157 received by letter and expetience. Four churches have been organ- ized and three houses opened for divine wor- ship. Appropriaticas amounting te $142 13 and a loan of $50 have been made in the church edifice department during the past year, and other applications had to be refused for the want of funds.

Legacies have been received from ihe following estates : Mrs. Lydia DeW..ie's, Halifax, $24; Miss Ruth Hamilton’s, On- slow, $50; Geo. Parker's, Cambridge, King's county, N. S., $40, and Mrs. Prud- ence Parker's, Canning, N. S., $162.68; making with what was received last year, $305 10 from that estate.

Damage by Lightning. MAN KILLED — HOUSES AND BARNS BLOWN DOWN.

Mr. John White, of O'Leary Station, sends the Pioneer the following account of the electric storm in that neighborhood : On Wednesday, J7th inst., . storm swept from Cape Wolfe along to ths O'Leary and Locke roads carrying destruction in its path. Itstruck the house of George Me- Arthur, sr., on Locke Rozed, blowing it down, a piece of which struc< him in the back of the neck hurting hin tadly. His son, after the house had fall .n, went to as- sist his father who got jamm:d among the debris, and got struck eithe: by lightning ora piece of timber. He «ied 16 hours after. Old Mzs. McArthur was badly in- jured, but it ia likely sh: will recover. Hugh McArthur, of the sam» family, was carried by the wind eight ch.ins and land- ed in a brook. than the house blew away leaving nothing but the floor and sills, The house of Peter Thompson (who was absent at the time) also blew down. Mrs. Thom son was alone with four children. She jook two and went to the greenhouse, while the other two Sat behind the woodpile through the storm. Wm. Shaw’s house blew over; his little son is badlv hurt. The houses of Matthew and Hugh Stewart dlew over, one of them going twenty feet. A space of about a half mile of woods is blown down from Locke to O'Leary Road, where the hurricane swept the roof off :. barn belong- ing to Wallace McNeill. The barn of Wm. Gray blew down, part of which was carried four chains before the storm. Three head of cattle were standing to leeward; in the morning they were minus a horn each, otherwise they were uninjured. Donald Gillis drove a load of hay in che barn and closed all the doors but one little one through which the wind ertered driving the load of hay through the side. A new barn belonging te Thomas S:ialiman about 75 feet long was moved sever feet sideways on a stone foundation and an old barn to the back of it was carried around to the front. Three barns belonging to the Harris family were blown over. A barn belong- ing to David Silliker had the roof blown off, a half going one chain each way. A large new barn of Richard Smallman’s, about 60 feet long, which was full of hay, was blown to acoms, the hiy being ali destroyed afterwards by the rain. Barns belonging to Mr. Baker and /Mr. Mountain were blown to pieces. Abou’ ten acres of green hardwood belonging to Mr. Mountain was iprovted and completely destroyed. A barn belonging to Hiram ‘Voodside was blown to pieces. A horse of James Mce- Donald was in the barn at th» time of the storm; the barn was blown away leaving the horse standing uninjured. A barn be- longing to widow Ramsay wa: blown into a field of grain belonging to R. Ellis, sr. The store of R. Ellis, jr., wa: badly twist- ed, the wind breaking all the windows and removing some of the shelves from their sockets. The corner and eaye: of Mr. Ellis’ barn was also swept away.
