The funeral obsequies of the late Presi- dent Garfield occurred in the capitol this afternoon. At a quarter to two the doors of the rotunda were opened. The first socivty to arrive was the Knights Templar commanders. They did not remain in the hali, simply passing around the catsfalque in double file. Four of their number bore fleral offerings in the shape of an immense maltese cross, which they reverently place d at the head of the dais.. At 10 minutes past two the Army of Cumberland filed in by the door leading from the Senate Chamber, and took seats reserved for them Immediately after the doors were thrown open to all holders of tickets. In ten minutes the chairs set apart for the general public vere comple stely filled. Soon the members of the diplomatie corps arrived and were ushered to seats reserved for | them. ‘he Military portion of the pro- cession which will escort the remains to the depot formed right in form facing the east front of the Capitel. At 2.40 repre- sentatives of the late President’s household | entered and took seats reserved for them. Members of the House of Representatives and Senate then filed in, followed by President Arthur and members of the Cabinet. The vast asseg- blage as of one accord rose to honor the | new President, and when they had re- | gained their seats the ceremonies wer vpened with the hymn, ‘‘ Asleep in Jesus,” beautifully rendered by the volunteer choir. Rev. Dr. Bankin then ascended the plat form at the head of the catafalque and read ecriptnral selections, and the Rev. Dr. Isaac Errett then offered prayer. He spoke in a clear but low tone of voice, and with much feeling. As the closing words of the prayer died away, Rev. F. D. “Power, of the Verraont Avenue Christian Church, of which President Gazfield was a member, delivered a feeling address. At the con- clusion of Dr. Power’s address, Rev. J. G. sutler offered prayer. This closed the ceremonies, and the vast assemblage, with bowed and revereut mein arose as the casket containing the remains of President Garfield was slowly borne from the build- ing in which he had gained so many laurels and triu: ophs. The casket was followed by President Arthur leaning on the arm of Secretary Blaine and by members of the Cabinet, and in a quarter of an hour the rotounda was nearly deserted.
