to the effect that one Caieb H Jenkins, a son of John Jenkins, Esq., of Alberry Plains, was then confined in the Peniten- tiary, at Canon City, Cclorado. The young man left California in a wagon abeut two years ago to come to Colorado. The last his parents heard from him was in New Mexico, bound for Gothie City. Since then—nearly two and\a half years ago—- not one word has been heard from him, When asked last winter if 1 had heard that he was in the Penitentiary, i invamally answered, No. But there was some people who would have him there anyway, and I determined to ascertain the truth or falsity of the story when | got back to Colorado. After repeated efforts, I finally got ear of the Warden of the Pententiary. In reply to my enquiry, as to whether there ever waa a man named Caleb H. Jenkins in his charge, he wrote as follows : —

Dxak Sir,—We have never had a man here by the name of Caleb H. Jenkins. The oni man by name of Jenkins we have is Atbert Jenkins. He is 38 years old, & feet 114 inches |high, complection dark, eyes brown, hair

i black. He was born et New York— his father ‘and mother, Joseph and Mary Jenkins,— live at Detroit, Mich., and he has a wife; Anna, also living at Detroit. Yours truly, W. B. Fevvon, Warden.

This, I think, settles the matter, and proves that whatever else became of the voung man, he did not find his way to the Penitentiary. Recently it has been report- ed to me that | was the author of the story. Nothing could be further from the fact, Mr. Caleb H. Jenkins was an old pupil of my own, his parents were friends of mine, and he left California to come direct to me. It is, therefore, unreascnable that I should circulate such a report ebout so intimate a friend of my own. Those, however, who ‘talked the most about this matter, were, I believe, the originators of the foul calumny. It is a shame that the feelings of his family should be harrowed, and that his own repn- tation should be blackened, by the tongue of slander. I knew Caleb H. Jenkins well, and I know that, whether living or dead, he was a credit to his country and the pride of his parents.

Hoping that this will settle forever the base slander so industriously circulated against so estimable a young man.

A CIRCULAR FROM THE CUSTOMS.

The following circular has been issued by the Customs Department, Ottawa, to the various Collectors of Customs.

Srr,—In consequence of the very fre- quent discovery of enclosures, which are not noted in the invoice or entry, in pack- ages sent for examination, I am de: irec by the Minister of Customs to furnish you with the following copy of the hftieth see- tion of the Customs Act relating thereto, with instructions to distribute the same generally to all the principal importers of » goods at your port, not only for their own information, but that they may communi- cate the same to their correspondents in foreign countries and Great Britain, with e view to the future prevention of this most dangerous practive :—

** The Collector sha! cause at least one pack- age in every invoice, at dat least one package in ten if there be mere than ten in any mvoice, and so many more as he or any appraiser deems it expedient to examine for the protec- tion of the revenue, to be sent to the ware- house, and there to be opened, examined and appr aixed-—the packages to be so opened being aesigoate? by the Collector ; aod if any pack- aye is found to contain any goods not men’ion- ed in the invoice, such goods shall be absolutely forfeited, amd if any goods are fuund which do not correspond with the description thereof in the invoice, and such omission and non-c: rre- spondence appears to have been made for the purpose of avoiding paymen* of the daty or of any part of the duty on such gods, or if in any invoies or entry eny goods have been nnder-valued with such intent as aforesaid, or ath made with regard to any auch ine
