CHAPPELL, Who was imprisoned and lashed for a rotbery he committed about eighteen months ago, has been released from further imprisonment on account of ill-health,

Hook anp Lapper.—The men of N. 1. Hook and Ladder Company, under the direction of Captain Butcher, went through drill with their ladders at the side of Medical Hail yesterday evening. On the ladders*used there was one extension, which gave them a height of about thirty- six feet. In the short space of one minute and a half the men had the ladders erect- ed and ready for use, [he ladders were taken down and everything made ready for departure in less than one minute. Captain Butcher has asmart lot of men under his contro); and after a little more practice Charlottetown will have a good and efficient Hook and. Ladder Company.

At the Stipendiary® Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, William Holland was fined $2 and costs or eight days, for being drunk and incapable. Isaac Henderson. drunk and lying in a yard, was fined $3 and costs or 14 days. Donald McKay was sent up four days, for drunk and incapa. ble. James Burns was sent up for 10 days for a, like offence. Peter McGuigan and Danie] Regan (each about 15 years of age) were committed 20 days for drunk and dis- orderly. Thomas Mack, drunk and dis- orderly, was fined. $1 and costs or four days. James Murphy, James Goodman. William Corish and Patrick Dunn, on com- plaint of Wm. Redhouse, for stealing a barrel of mackerel, were remanded for trial on Wednesday. The John MeNally, mentioned in our report of-Saturday, was John McNally, Blacksmith.

FUT UP, OR SHUT UP.

A Great Trot is advertised to come oft on Summerside Driving Park on Wednes- day next. The horses ‘French Sporter’ and ‘ Jeft Davis, which, through the un- fairness of the Judges, were not allowed to compete in the Upton Park Races, will be on the grounds. It seems that the Char- lottetown folksdo not like the idea of being beaten by Summerside, and have re- solved that henceforth they will not allow any Summerside horses to compete on the Upton Park.—Summerside Progress.

Knowing the above paragraph was ab- surdly incorrect; and wishing to ‘let the public have the ‘rights of the matter,” we passed it to Dr. Jenkins last evening; and he, after reading it, wrote the follow- ing:

“‘* The ;statement relating to the horses ‘French Sporter’. and ‘Jeff Davis’ not being allowed to trot at Upton Park, is, to use a mild term, grossly‘incorrect ; and, so far from Charlottetown being afraid of Summerside horses, | will find three horses in or near the City that will trot the best three in or near Summerside, three sepa- rate matches, at Upton Park. for $100 a side pach match. I don’t think Summer side will dare to take this up; but we shal] see. TI willalso pay the expenses of the Summerside horses and men to and from Upton.
