Our Liberal friends have derived some morbid satisfaction from the severe criticisms heaped upon ir act-s, the satisfaction of at least squirming i ‘trodden upon, and not only in squirming but i. haven trying to hit back but even this melancholy satisfaction is about to be denied them by some of their friends. At the Tyne Valley farmers’ meeting, for a brief report of which we are indebted to Mr. J. Dewar, M. L. A., it was decided to absolutely ignore the representatives. One of the speakers re- marked, in the course of his speech, that at their last political meeting the two representatives, Messr Saunders and Dennis, occupied the platform while the farmers occupied the back benches; henceforth the representatives were t0 be given the back ben- ches while the farmers took the platform. When a party has sunk so low as t0 be utterly ignored even .- by its friends, by those who elected them their casc- is hopeless. We do not suppose for a moment that the good people of Tyne Valley are going to leavl the matter in a condition of neutrality or simpll pacifism, but that they also will demand the resig- nation of representatives whom they consider not worth the little attention 0f even being asked tc give a reason for the actions which have brought them illto such contempt. . d?" The [iassing of‘ this bill oc- cupied several days of an already long session; mun) legal precautions were enacted and learnedlv ex- pounded to trilartl against the tearing up of home- steads, compensating land owners for damage dour to their property bv the overflow of oil or bv the dumping of coal on the growing crops. It was also, if we recollect aright, provided, that in. considera- "tion of the trouble to which the legislature was put in legally framing the bill, the explorers should fore- feit a sum of money every year in which they did not expend a certain number of thousands of tiol- lars in their exploration. What has become of this project? Was it too a bluff of the jubilant party re- joicing in their new found power? The bill was fath- ered and mothered by the Attorney-General; the farmers’ interests were safeguarded in the event of their farms being blown up or dug up and the affair was launched with such fervor that many of our peo ple actually smelled oil fumes welling up through the soil in their ploughed fields. In the turmoil occas- ioned bv the new taxes and other things this oil hunl ing and coal digging proposition was almost forgot- ten but, recently, the Guardian has been asked for some information on the subject. Possibly the Pat- riot, which is in the confidence of the government may throw some light on the subject.
