We had a call this morning from an old friend, Mr. J.H. Haslam, of Winnipeg, who ison a flying trip through the Pro- vinces. Mr. Hasiam is looking for a train load of young steers of beef breeds for the Western ranges, where there is now & scarcity of stock this kind,
A+ked about the conditions in the west, Mr. Haslam said that there, as well as bere, the talk wae all of the Klondike, and there were tremendous crowds ef people now rushing into that country. The trains are leaving Montreal for Vancouver every evening ia four to five sections, and there is no doubt that the rush ie quite unpre- cendented in the history of gold seeking. Californiain 49, Australis, the Rand and their stampedcs-all pale into insiguificance before the wild rush to the Canadian gold fielde. It is estimated that there are now 100,006 people going in there, carrying with them $1000 each, which mean tbat there will be carried into that country thie year $100,000,00@ of money besides capital which will go in in other ways for rai!way building etc. It is doubtful if in the next few years there will be that miuch gold come cut.
There is found to be a great deal of dir- appointment on the part of a lot of people | who are going in there ss the conditions are borribiy +evere and there will be no facilities for feeding or Jooking after so many people, and the Klondike is a region where it may be trathfully eaid that gold will not buy everything.
Continuing Mr. Haslam eaid that apart from the rush to the Klondike there was e great deal of prosperity in the Northwest. The great rush has dsvarted the movement to Manitoba, buta large number of sensible Dakota and Minnesota farmers have lately settled in Manitoba and there are prospecie of a immigration thither this year.
Winnipeg is growing fast and will be the seoond city in importance in Cenads in a very short time, as it is the business social and educational centre of a couviry as Jarge and with more natural wealth than Jermany, and which will eventually have as good a population. There is a | t of lard for eale now within 15 miles of Win- nipeg which I know to be as good land as anv in the North-west or anywhere else for that matter, and whieh can be bought for $5 00 per acre with ten years to pay for it. This is the greatest chance for farmers I known of,and I will be bappy to give all particulars to anyone who will write to me at mv home at Headingly, Manitoba.
We are establishing a condensed milk factory, and have in contemplation a beet sugar factory.
The district is excelleut for wheat and mixed farming. It isa surer thing than the Klondike.
Mr. Haslam leaves for the north tonight and is very sorry he will be usable to see more of his many friends. He may return on the opening of navigation.

Key West, Fla., March ‘1 —Thecovr: of inquiry, aceording to Rear Admiral Sicard, will continue its work through the coming week, as it is not yet reqdy to make a report on the Maine disaster. The statensent that Captain Barker carried the report to Washington is officially denied. The object of hie recent viet to Key Weat was! not ascertained outside of official circles tilltoday. It can be authoritatiely asserted that Barker had nothing to do with the court of inquiry.

“The Merritt wrecking tug Under- writer arrived in port at midnight last night from Havana, whereshe went with the derrick Chief, which is as~ sisting in the workon the Maine. Cap- tain Wiley w'll again start to Havana, probably tomorrow with the barge Lone Siar. Capt. Wiley believes that the Maine was destroyed through the agency of an inernal explosion. In an _ interview aboard the Underwriter this afternoon, Capt. Wiley said: “Without having having opportunity to ex’mine the wreck below water, I would say that the Maine was blown up by‘an internalexplosion. It is the most confused pile of distorted metal imaginable. There is one deck above water which is turnedcompletely over by the explosion. The deck is bottomside up, with thedeck frame cn top. That looks to me as if the destruc.ive force came from within. Ita mine did the work and played so much havoe with the upper deck, wiere mnst the bottom be? Can she have any? They aay they have found rome at the bottom intact. My opinion is that if the aftair bad occured in an English harbor, say Kingston, Ja.,there would not be one man in a hunared who would say external cause after looking at that wreck as it is today. I heard the Spanieh divers found a piece of the forward turret. I do not believe a mine inthe harbor would have broken the turret, while an internal explosion would.”

Loxpon, March 21—The cteamer which was sank on Wednesday morning in colli- sion with the British barque British Princess, off Gabbard lightehip, resulting in the steamer sinking immediately with the loss of her crew, is believed to have neen the Ville D’Auvers, a Belgian gov- ernment training ship, having on board sixty cadets and twenty officers, in addition to her regular crew.
