‘| Missed the Bus" and the Game

Blames all on small bladder

On Thursday, September 5, 2002, U.P.E.I. soccer player, Ryan Anstey, was singing his own version of Kris Kross’ hit song "I missed the bus," but his song was called "I missed two vans and one soccer game." The team was headed to St. FX for an exhi- bition soccer game, a trip that required the team to take a bus to be the ferry at Wood Islands where they would board, and then you be picked up on the other side by two vans from St. FX. Well, Ryan made it on the bus and onto the boat without a problem, but then nature called and things got a little tricky from there.

After a hard morning of drink- ing water in preparation for the game, the inevitable need to relieve himself became too much for Ryan. "While we were loading the van," Anstey explained "I said, I'm just going to use the bathroom," but this statement went unheard by his fellow teammates, even though Ryan alleges that some- one "suggested that [he] should take a knee." Anstey has no idea what hap- pened "I sprinted to the bathroom, and sprinted back, and as I got back they were just pulling away." He tried to catch up with the vans, but all was in vain, as the vans quickly drove out of

sight. Ryan hoped that the vans might return, but they didn't.

Stranded at the ferry, Ryan tried calling home in hopes of getting his teammate, Jordan Chandler's cell phone number, but was unsuccessful as Chandler's phone was turned off. With nothing else to do, Ryan decided to hang around for the seventy-five minute wait, and take the ferry back to PEI in hopes of meeting someone he knew on the boat, who would drive him home. But then, as Ryan stood along the rocks by the wharf starring out hopelessly at the water, a man walking his dog approached Anstey and began to make small talk. Before Ryan knew what had happened he was sitting in a lazy boy chair in the back of a retired couple's Winnabago with the couple's dog, Jack Daniels, quietly basking in the sun. The dog was named after the women's favourite drink, Jack Daniels, which Ryan says the woman was very proud of. "She had a shrine to Jack Daniels. She just loves it. She doesn't drink it with any- thing. She drinks it straight all the time." The friendly couple, from Massachusetts, drove Ryan from Wood Islands directly to his front door, where after dropping him off, they took a picture of him in front of their Winnabago. Ryan jokingly smiled as

right. Ya know, I made some new friends." Ryan also firmly believes that "being in a shirt and tie helped a lot. I look a little more presentable."

Meantime, with Ryan safe and sound at home, the team was in St. FX passing out the jerseys, and when they came to Ryan's number, needless to say the response to Ryan's absence was mixed. "We kind of laughed," said Charles Bosworth, describing the mood of the team. "Lewis [the team's

coach] was kind of mad at us, and also kind of mad at Ryan, but he laughed at the same time. So it's all an experi- ence." An experience that carried over to Sunday, as the team played their first game of the season, and conve- niently enough it was against St. FX. There were no hard feelings on the team, and Ryan, well, he made up for lost time, as he was a starter for only the second time in his AUS career, where he played his first entire game of his AUS career, and scored the tying goal in a two-all draw. With an effort like this, I'm sure that the men's soccer team will be sure to check to see that Ryan Anstey is around before they leave for the next road trip.

And remember, the next time you see a guy walking around in a shirt and tie, ask him how he's doing and if he needs a ride anywhere. After all there's a good chance that he's from U.P.E.L.

Playas of the Week

The male player of week two of the fall season is Brett Norton. Brett had a strong showing this week, as he lead the men's soccer team to solid victories over the University of Moncton, and over UNB. Against Moncton, Brett put on a goal-scoring clinic, as he left the opposing goal- tender stunned after scoring four goals. UPEI went on to win the game 5-0. The following day Brett played another strong game with one goal in a 3-0 victory over UNB. Brett graduat- ed from Charlottetown Rural High School, and is currently in his third year of the Arts program, where he majors in political science. Brett states that the people, who have been the greatest influence in his athletic career are Joey Seaman and Charles Bosworth. When asked what his inter- est are, he briefly thought about stat- ing reading, but changed his answer to "chillin' out," and in the future Brett hopes "to educate people.”

The female player of week two of the fall season is Joy Elliott. Joy played two hard games on defence during the weekend, where she was able to make keys plays throughout both games, and help the women's field hockey team earn two hard- fought ties to start off the season. Joy is a graduate from Sackville High School in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, and is in her fourth year at UPEI, where she is completing a major in political studies and a minor in Island Studies.

Joy says that the most influen- tial people in her athletic career are her parents. In her spare time Joy coaches High School field hockey, and the Special Olympics. Joy plans to graduate in 2003, and plans to take on a career in CSIS or Foreign Services.
