It was a spectacular day for woodpeckers. Team 1 was travelling in tandem using two vehicles when, about 12:30 pm on the Tarantum Road (Rte 304), Dwaine Oakley and Eric Marcum heard the raucous call of a Pileated Woodpecker out the window. The lead vehicle was alerted by walkie talkie and the five team members utilized a CD playback to see if a response would be obtained. Sure enough, the call was heard and shortly thereafler the flash of a dark, large bird was seen. Suddenly, the Pileated Woodpecker flew up from the base of a snag and was clearly visible. Dwaine was able to obtain the firSt images of a Pileated Woodpecker on Prince Edward Island. Several members were able to record this as a life bird on the Island list. Only 10 minutes later, another rarity, a Black—backed Woodpecker flew into a small black spruce bog snag. This was the best day for woodpecker sightings on a Bain Bird Count.

Needless to say, the species bolded in the text marked highlights of the day. Some participants were successful in obtaining new first Island records.
