A despatch from Ottawa says :—The Geological Survey party are said to have discovered, near Whitefish Lake, an im- mensé mountain of crystaline, phosphate lime. Itis a great discovery if real, as leading to silver veins.

ACCIDENTAL DeatTH.—On Monday last Mr. Francis Sanderson, of Head of St. Peter's Bay, had been working in his field, and when returning to his house he placed a hoy eight years old on the back of a spirited horse. THe war between Ray. Stephen Lawson‘ of the Presbyterian, on the one hand, and Henry Lawson, of the Patriot, J. H. Fletch- er, of the Argus, and a dozen corresponds ents, on the other side, rages wildly. The editor of the /’resbyterian worries his adver~ saries considerably, and they are advertis- ing him handsomely. On the whole, the Presbyerian is achieving fame. The Argus which is independent in Dominion politics, has come to the conclusion that “ all reli- able accounts from Nova Scotia go to show that Mr. Premier Mackenzie received aDyo thing but a flattering reception in that Province. His Government is on the wane in Nova Scotia beyond the shadow of a doubt.’’— Moncton Times.

FrighrFUL Acciwent ar Batnurst, N. B.— Richard Johnstone, of Wentworth, N. S., while engaged in shunting cars at Bith. urst Station on the 22d, lost his hold of the brake wheel and fell from the top of the box car upon which he was standing to the track below. The beam of the break struck him on the head, shattering his cheek bone and splitting his lip badly. He jumped to his feet and tried’ to get from between thecars, but his foot doubled under him and he fell upon the track again; the wheels of one of the cars passed over his feet, cutting oft his left heel, breaking his right leg above the ankle, and dislocating it at the knee. He was re-~ moved toa house near by, where he now ies in ® very precarious condition. How he escaped instant death is a mystery.— Hz. Recorder,

Uncle Sam and Young Canada are both angling in Canadian Waters; Canada has hooked a fish by the gill, while Uncle Sam hooked athe same fish by the tail. He appears to have been doing a good business, for his pannier is pretty well filled with ‘‘ Cana- dian fish not paid for.” The cute old man says, ‘‘ Yes, let us have peace and every- thing else we asked for.’’ “ Generous John Bull’’ steps in between the anglers, and deliberately proceeds to cut young Canada's line so that Uncle Sam can have the fish, saying *‘ "Ere, take the fish at a nominal price—anything to have peace. ” With amazement depicted upon his coun. tenance young Canada says, ‘‘ Uld man, hadn’t you better pay me for my fish bes fore you give it away! SuppeN DeatH.—Captain Hewiston, of Chatham, N. B., died suddenly last night, about nine o’clock, on board the brig ‘St. Michael,” now loading deal from the wrecked vessel ‘‘Salacia,"’ which was stranded at Belle Creek last fall, and owned by the Hon, Wm. Muirhead, of Chatham. Captain Hewiston was troubled for some time witha severe cough, and last night shortly after he had gone to the cabin, the men heard him cry: “Ob Dan, oh Dan,” which immediately brought Mr. Danie! Crimmens and the rest of the men to the cabin, where they found the poor fellow bleeding profusely from the mouth, Mr. Crimmens said, ‘Captain, is that blood ?” but received no reply. He had evidently burst a blood vessel, and died almost im- mediately. His remains were brought to town, and his friends telegraphed to tos day. — Patriot.

peruse attended a meeting in the Athe- nweum on Friday evening last, for the pur- pose of nomivating candidates for the Licensing Board, it Was agreed that the three persons re_ ceiving the highest number of ballots should be the choice. Messrs. Dawson, Cundal] aad Blake received the nomination. The next highest on the list was the Hon. H. J. Callbeck. Since then Mr. Blake bas declined to run. In Monday moraing’s Kzaminer, Mr. Joseph Knight offers his services to the public without getting the consent of the meeting that nominated the can- didates, although he received but very tew bal- lots on Friday night. Since Mr. Knight has thought proper not to be bound by the decision at the meeting, it opens the way for others, and 5, therefore, offer myself as a candidate for the suftrages of the people. If elected, | shall en- deavor to diseharge my duty fearlessly and im- partially. In our City we have taverns, or night colleges, where the young are taught to driok swear and gamble ; and, if elected, I shall do my utmost to have them closed.
