A Lasson in TempPerance.—The following story illustrating the evils of intoxicating Mquors comes from Midgic and is vouched for by a gentleman who says a deacon: told him. It appears.that in spite of the vigilance of the Scott Act authorities a worthy lady of that place dispenses the prohibited elixer to the needy ones who have the necessary equivalent of cash. Ona certain day last week trade was particularly brisk and the water in which the glasses were washed bore a pro- nounced alcoholic flavor towards the close of the day. Next morning the lady used this water in mixing food for her hens. Judge of ber surprise a few minutes later at going to the barnyard and finding the rooster and four of the best hens lying : an attitude of death. Taking the apparently dead fowls in- side she plucked the feathers off, and threw the earthly tenements behind the barn. Whether the ae had a sobering effect or not is not known, but in an hour the birds regained consciousness and may now be seen strutting about gorgeously arrayed in full suits of clothes, made by.the woman under a fit of penitence.—Sackville.
