MEETINGS are held on the first Tuesday of the month (except June, July, August and September) at 8:00 p.m. at the Farm Centre on University Avenue, Charlottetown. Members and non-members are welcome.

MEMBERSHIP is open to anyone interested in the natural history of Prince Edward Island. Membership is available at any meeting or by contacting Margaret Mallett, 53 Fitzroy St., Charlottetown, P.E.I. CIA 1R4 (telephone 894-9595). Annual rates are as follows: regular - $4; student - $2; family $5. Renewals are due in early January.

The pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is by far our largest wood— pecker. The conspicuous bright red pointed crest makes it hard to con—

fuse with any other bird, if its size wasn't a dead giveaway. Thls crow- sized bird is black bodied, occasionally with a few white bars on the

sides and broad white wing linings that show very well in flight. Its ‘ preferred habitat is mature woodlands of various kinds, especially those containing some standing dead trees.
