The Potato Crop.

Reports on the potato crop from nearly 1000 special correspondents of the New England Homestead show that throngho it the lower provinces, New England and New York the acreage and yield are consi ier- ably below that of last year’s. As a whole the acreage has decreased about 15 per cent. and the yield is about one-third less than in 1883. This meskes the acreage nearly the same as in 1882, with a con- siderably lighter yield. Prices now ranye from 22@ per bush. as the lowest shipping

price in New York state, to $1 at eastern Massachusetts town, averagil g 35 to 50c. per bushel. The rot is

quite prevalent, and grubs have greatly injured the tubers in many sections, Th: rot appears to be the old-fashioned stinking decay that can be depended upon to cauee great injury. Where early potatoes are rotting there is some hasie to sell at current prices. The crop in the eastérn provinces and Quebec is short. In the great shipping counties of Nova Scotia itis almost a com- plete failure. Instead of exporting pota- toes, some sections will have to import for seed. ‘The Murder of Benj, Trefry,

On Saturday, Oct. 18th, Benj. Trefry, of East River, in this County, left b's father’s house to visit a young woman to whom he was shortly to be married. He started a little before dark, and was seen to enter upou a lonely stretch of wood road which mede a short cut. He did not reach his destination, and has net since turned up. Hundreds of people turned out and searched the woods in every direction, but without success. A neighbor named Absalom Hurburt has been heard to threaten the missing man. He has been arrested, andjl»st night confessed to having murdered Trefry and thrown his body into a large pond. He implicates others in his confession. The pond is being dragged for the hody.

Serious Storm on the Pacific Coast

San Francisco, Oct, 29.

A storm occurred on Oct. llth, and con- tinued three days, Twenty houses at Cape St. Lucas were destroyed, and a great num- ber of cattle were killed. Nine Mexican coasters were lost. Each had from three to five persons on board, and all perished except oue sailor and one boy. The storm was the most violent ever known in these parts.

Toronto, Oct, 29. The Globe's London cable says Sir John Macdonald has seen his London physician, Sir Andrew Clarke, who declares there is nothing in Sir John’s condition to excite apprehension.
