Just call me Grinch

hate Christmas. Pretty strong state- I ment, but it’s true. I hate Christmas carols, lights, decorations, and all the merriment that’s involved with it. I really hate all those stupid Christmas shows ont.v., [mean, who really wants to spend Christmas with Anne Murray or Rita MacNeil?

Let’s look at why people like Christmas- it’s because they get presents, time off from work and school, an excuse to get drunk, and did I mention that people enjoy it because they get presents? Aldera keeps harping that people are friendlier at Christmas time-could it be because they are so filled with the Christmas spirit? No! It’s because they have time off work and, well, maybe a little bit of Jack Daniels spirit in them. ——— Let’s suppose for one minute that Iam a religious person and that I believe in Jesus and Joseph and Mary in a little manger in Bethlehem- then why would! wantto deface such a religious mo- ee ear ont as the birth of Christ by bursting loudly into Jingle Bell Rock? I think Christmas is for hypocrites. Christmas was invented by some money-hungry person like Scrooge. It’s all a big crock. You might say, as a Catholic, that you go to midnight mass to celebrate the birth of Christ, and that Christ- mas is a very religious time of year for you- humbug. You’re probably one of the many who go to midnight mass and then to a party after- wards. I’ll bet Mary and Joseph didn’t have a party after their son was born.

Another reason I don’t like Christmas is the pressure it puts on people to go out and buy expensive gifts- it’s usually the people who can’t afford it who spend the most money. Did you know that the suicide rate is higher at Christmas time, and that more people are lonely and depressed during Christmas than any other time of the year?

My family and friends call me Scrooge at Christmas time, but I think they should call me the Grinch instead. Scrooge had a big change of heart- the Grinch didn’t, he just saw the love and warmth that a group of people shared without all the trimmings usually associated with Christ- mas. Support group forms

A place for single-parent students

ingle parent students are students like

any other, except that they have a child

or children to work around. The single parent student has not only the financial obliga- tion to their child but also the time constraints that children entail. It is hard enough to find time to do your reading and assignments, but when you have to cook, clean and babysit, it is nearly impossible. Working around the sched- ule your child has can be not only difficult but also frustrating for a parent who needs time to do their own work.

Lora Pye hopes to make this a touch easier. She, in conjunction with Student Services, is starting a support group for all single parent students who are interested. This group will meet on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to allow single parent students to retreat into a friendly atmosphere where their children are welcome and the people understand your problems. The group will provide more than just a place for

Dear John, Tread a recent survey that said after the age of 19 only six percent of the population has not had sex.

This figure scares me. Six percent seems very low. You see, I am twenty-four years old and still a virgin (by choice). I know being a virgin at my age is not the trend. Trust me, I have had offers. I guess this is stupid but I have been waiting for Miss Right. You see, I always felt making love was the most special bond two people could share.

There’s nothing wrong with being a virgin, it just shows that you have a lot more self-control than most people, and that you can stick to your values. Personally, I think I should have waited longer, but J was one of the mindless many who gave in to peer pressure and jumped the gun-so to speak. I asked my girlfriend if girls care ifa guy waits. She said that the girl you finally decide to make love with will probably feel very special. It’s a much better idea to wait for Miss (or Mister) Right than to throw it away with Miss Wrong.

This group will be a forum for the discussion of common concerns and problems. The group being established is for those single parent students interested. There is as of yet no set layout. The student services department will be there to aid the group if it is deemed necessary. The group can be anything those interested want from it. It can bea structured weekly meeting or a drop-in type of place, depending on what is wanted by those involved. This group is open to any single parent student interested in attending. The group should begin to meet early next semester, and notices will be put up. Anyone interested can call Lora Pye at 368-2169 in Blanchard Hall or Marian Basha at student services 566-0443 in the Robertson Library.
