That point-3128.30-was reached on Tuesday of last week, on a day when the market was hit by a wave of selling that left the ticker unable to keep abreast of transactions. By the end of the day a broad rally was under way and the market closed higher.

There were other signs of bull market fever. For no reason any- one could point to, du Pont soared 1555 points in a single day. it sub- sequently dropped but was up again as the week ended.

Oil shares were under pressure for a good part of the week, re- flecting reductions -in gasoline and fuel oil prices. They managed a good comeback on Friday, how- ever.

The most active stock last week was General Electric, which lost is atldddt on a turnovr of 177,200 shares. Radio Corporation gained 1 at 3054 on 148,900 shares; Chrysler was up 2-'3': at 653A on 146,800 shares; U. S. Steel rose 1 at 4916 on 106,900 shares and Reynolds Tobacco B dropped lit at 3371. on 102,600 shares.

On the American stock exchange Ford Motor of France led the most active list with a gain of 3-16 at His on 141,800 shares. Webb and Knapp was unchanged at IV; on 95,600 shares: Firth Sterlin up be at 6 on 75,100 shares; C. and C. Super Cola ahead it at 2V4 on 85,- 900 shares and Electric Bond and Share up '16 at 22 on 58,800 shares. Canadian stocks were mixed on the final day Friday. International Nickel gained Si, Distillers Sea- gram advanced 39 and Dome Mines fell ti.

Canadian issues on the Ameri- can stock exchange were quiet.

CLEVELAND (CP)- Increasing prices will not weaken the steel industry's competitive posi- tionf Steel Magazine said today. because the effects of pay hikes won by the C10 United Steelwork- ers union "will spread ultimately" to other metals. The .93 a ton average jump in the price of steel was an effort to pass along the additional costs of the new contract between steel producers and the union, the metalworking journal added.

Seismic 0rews' Vital Job In Oil Industry

TULSA, Okla. (AP)-One of the oil industry's most vital jobs is that of the seismic crews who sound the earth's rock strain for structures which might hear petro- leum. -

They work with precisely-engim cared, highly-sensitive equipment which records the vibrations set off by dynamite-created ”earth- quakes."

They are the result of painstak- ing research by engineers and careful manufacture by skilled machinists and wiring men in lab- oratories such as Carter Oil Co, maintains here. In it custom-de- signed seismograph equipment is made for use all over the world solely by affiliates of the Standard Oil Co. New Jersey.

Last year 3750.000 was spent equipping or servicing 27 seismic crews for Imperial, Creole, Inter- national. Standard Vacuum and Carter.

At this moment the United States doesn't seem to know wheth- er a line will have to be drawn in Indo-China against the Commun- ists, or perhaps outside Indo-Chine because that country couldn't be defended any longer.

There is even me certainty that a line will ever be drawn or that the allies will in fact ever act to- gether, or separately. to keep southeast Asia out of communism.

Indo-China has three states:

Viet Nam. Laos, and Cambodia.

The fighting between French and the Vietininh is in Viet Nam. The French are being smashed. They may be forced to yield all of Viet Nam unless the allies intervene and there is no sign the allies have any such intention.

If Viet Nam falls to the Com- munists, Laos and Cambodia may, fall next unless the alliu step in and tell the Communists:

"No farther."

There's no sign they intend to do that either. i

Once the Communists got Indo- china, they could pump supplies across the border to help revolu- tionary Communists in such neigh- boring states as Burma and Thai- land, just as China helped the Victmlnh.

New Defence Minister Gets Down To Work

.By DAVE McINTOSl-I . . . . .. Canadian Press Staff Writer OTTAWA (CP)-Affable, rotund Ralph Campney bounced into "A" building at national defence head- quarters bright and early Friday to take over as Canada's new de- fence minister.

Though appointed only Thursday as successor to the retiring Brooke Claxton, the Vancouver lawyer finds the wartime buildings not unfamiliar. He was associate de- fence minister from Feb. 12, 1953. Mr. Campney. who appears much younger than his 50 years, looked like a man ready to get down to hard work. His post is one of the most gruelling in Ot- tawa.

"I'm used to working long hours and "I'm 0. K. so far," he told a reporter. "My wife thinks I work too hard but it doesn't show in my weight. I'm a little heavier than I care to be and I've been doing a bitlof reducing. I feel bet- ter for it."

He and his staff have occupied a suite of offices across the hall from Mr. Claxtonis but will move into the former 4 ' ministe 's premises. 4

SERVED OVERSEAS

"I hope to get settled in by next week," said Mr. Campney, who served overseas for four years in the First World War with the Medical Corps, 10th Infantry Bat- talion and the Royal Flying Corps. "I realize how important this job is, and how very exacting and strenuous. I've had some exper- ience with it and I think it will be intensely interesting.

"I hope to have visited.all de- fence installations before the sum- me? is over. That is, the ones I haven't seen. because I've already visited a number of them."

In this respect. he will be follow- ing in the footsteps of Mr. Claxton, an inveterate traveller and ques- tioner.
