4. Mr. McCarthy is a purely selfish pol!- tician.

I am pressed for my views in regard to the resignation of Hon. N. Clarke Wal- lace. Frankly , think Mr. Wallace made a mistake last spring in taking such a position as would probably ultimately | force him to resign. I think, too, ihat he chose the worrt possible time to resign. I esteem Mr. Waliace very highly, and I wish to speak highly cf him, bnt whoever his advisers may be they appear to have robbed him of his usual discretion.

I cannot refrain from Saying, too, that | it was ungenerous to sneer at Sir Frank | Smith in order to gain a little me nears from an excited audieace. Sir Frank | Smith spoke of Mr. Wallace in a much more courteous and considerate way. 1| do not believe that Mr. Wallace himself really thinks Sir Frank Smith suggested that Sir McKenzie Bowell should be made prime minister with apy im proper motive. There never has been a public man in Canada whose reputation for absolute in- teyrity is more deservedly high than the character of Sir Frank Smith. The fact that he is able to rise superior to creed prejudices and cooperate with a pa-t grand master of the O ange order in the direction of the affairs of his country, reflects infisite

Desperate Efforts of the Grits,

At the Federal bye-election held here yesterday Hon. Colonel Prior was elected, defeating his Liberal opponent, William Templeman, by a majority of 168. — Des- perate efforts were made to defeat the new Dominion Minister, principally on account of the Government's policy on the Manito- va school question. Templeman, who is proprietor of the Times, was opposed to all remedial legislation, and Joseph Martin, antbor of the Manitoba school law, came here to assist himin the fight. Cclonel Prior’s work in the campaign was some- what interfered with by a serious iliness in his family. But noiwithstanding that and the fierce efforts of his opponents, Victoria has returned British Columbra’s new minister in _—-
