Several millers to-day wired to withdraw all their flour from the market for the preseut, Kent mills flour was quoted from Chatham to-day at five-ten, which is an advance of sixty-five conts per barrel within the past three weeks. - ~~ Nor Dyrxse Yer.—The friends of Harvey McKenna, the expert billiard player, who visited this city last year, will be pleased to learn that he is not dying of consumption, as reported in the Boston papers some time ago. Mr. McKenna, in a letter to a friend in St. John, says that he over-exerted himself and had a slight hemmorhage as a result, and has since kept quiet, as any sensible man would. His doctor says he is in no danger. ~~

A Wiexep Poxicemanx.—Policeman Wood, of Moncton, who belongs to St. John, is quite a lady’s man, and since his being appointed to a position on the force some three months ago, has been the subject of considerable gossip. A tew weeks ago he married. Miss Annie Trainor, of P. B. Island, and on Saturday last was the principal witness against another St. John man named Donovan, charged with a viola- tion of the Scott Act. Wood's testimony was coptradictory to previous statements made by him on oath, and the Scott Act prosecutor threatened to proceed against him for perjury. On Monday a detective arrived from St. John with a warrant sworn out by a woman named McCready, who wants the gay and festive offi- cer to become responsible{for her illegitimate child. Wood was locked up, and, at the request of the police committee, has resigned his position on the force.

Tue Banp or Hore EnrerralInMent.— The Band of Hope entertainment in St. Peter’s Schoelroom, last night, was very successful. Naturally, there was not so large an audience as at the original enter- tainment ; but even the inclement weather did not prévent a goonly number from en- joying the evening's programme. It was a genuiue delight to see the children, —some

of them very tiny—so fascinatining in their clever little recitations and songs, while their elder brothers and sisters supplied the more diffi-

cult parts of the performance and the very creditable music with which it was inter- spersed. Miss Lloyd sang a solo in a sweet voice, and received a hearty encore. Rev. Fred E. J. Lloyd, Mr. H. A. Tanton and Mr. Maynard also sang solos. It is need- less to particularize, for the Entertainment was in all features a success and a pleasure to all attending.

Speech.

Orrawa, May 15,

A banquet was given in honor of Lord Lansdowne at the Russel House to-night, lt was an immense success. About 250 guests set dowa, including members of the Cabinet, Judges of the Supreme Court, Senators, Members of the Commons and leading citizens. The Governor-General made a lengthy and important speech. He spoke of his pleasant sojourn in Canada and was glad to carry away with him what was beyond all price, that was the good will and sympathy of the Canadian people. He reviewed the principal politi- exl events of his administration, and in reference to the North?est rebellion said he had no doubt that all feeling of race antagonism would pass away and the people» would only remember with pride the gallantry shown by our citizens and soldiers in putting down the rebellion. He had always felt that the presence of a cause of dispute between Canada and the United States was little short of a calamity to the British race, and furnished a pretext to evil-disposed persons to keep up a chronic irritation between the two coun- tries. The Governments of Great Britain, the United States and Canada were now in harmony, and whatever might be the fate of the treaty negotiations, it had paved the way for dissipating the gnly cloud which ob- secured the political horizon on this continent. As to the scheme lately put forward looking to a revision of the fiscal policy of the British Empire and the formation of a com- mercial confederation or tariff unians between England the Oolonies, he helieved that no such thing was possible, The fiscal system of the British Empire was in a state of chaos, no two colonies having a similar tariff, and he believed that it was impossible

to evolve anything like uniformity out of the existing ounditior of things.

ing their foreign trade which was three- fourths of their total trade on the chance of improying the _ re- maining fourth. He spoke feelingly

Orrawa, May 15.

In the House to-day Sir Hector Lan- gevin, in reply to C. H. Tupper, of Pic- tou, said it was not the intention of the Government to replace immediately ,the dredge Cape Breton, lost last fall ; but that when replaced it would be by a better class of dredge.

In answer to General Laurie, Mr. Foster said the attention of the Government had been informally called to the danger re- sulting from the breaking up of rafts such as the one being constrycted at the Joggins; and during recess they would mak enquiries, and if deemed expe- dient, -would introduce legislation next session dealing with the subject.

Sir Hector Langevin laid onthe table the correspondence between the munici- palities of Antigonish and Guysboro and the Dominion Government, relating to the cost of the right.of way of the Eastern Extension Railway.

The House proceeded to the consider- ation of; Government bills, and spent all

the afternoon over Hon. Mr. Chapleau’s bill amending the Civil Service Act. A pumber of the members of the House

wanted to amend the act so as to dispense with promotion examinations or restrict them to strictly departmental subjects. These proposals the Secretary of State re- sisted as calculated to impair the efficiency of the Act.

Chinese—Not Wanted. Sypney, N. S. W., May 15.

The steymer Guthrye arrived to-day with 160 Chinese immigrants on board. They attempted to land, but were prevented by police. The Premier to-day informed the Assembly that he had cabled the Imperial Government that the Government of New South Wales had re- solved to preventthe landing of Ohinese immigrants “not provided with naturaliza- tion papers, and that their decision had the support of the people and assembly. He further said he would to-morrow move the suspension of standing orders, for the pur- pose of enabling the House immediately to pass a bill substitating for the Act restrict- ing Chinese immigration a measure entirely prohibiting such immigration.

A very heavy rain fell throughout the proyinee to-day which must have caused big freshets, although no_ reports of damage have yet been received.

The steamer Worcester, which left Boston on Saturday, and was due here Monday morning, has not yet arrived.

Nothwithstanding the downpour of rain the school] children’s arbor day proceedings were largely atrended, Patriotic speeches were made by Rev. Dr Burns, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church ; Archbishop O’Brien, Mayor O’Mullin and Dr. Forrest, Principal of Dalhousie College.

Military Preparations. Lonpon, May 15. In the Commons to-night, Hon. Mr. Smith moved the adoption of a grant of £800,000 for the defence of the Australian colonies, to be repaid in twelve years with three per cent interest. Sir,—Your correspondent who signs him- self ‘‘Ignorant Churchman,” asks two questions, to which, Lhope, it will be felt that these are appropriate answers:

First—The amount of learning he needs is that which would enable him to know the meaning of the word *‘ invocation,” and the difference between an aspiration and a prayer.

Second—-There is no provision in the Book of Common Prayer for ministrations to a man condemned to die, and therefore a clergyman of the church is compelled to do the best he can in such trying circum- stances.

May I be allowed to ask for, at least, a little of that charity which ‘*thinketh no evil,” to be exercised towards those from whom we differ ; as it is easy enough to suppose Ourselves to possess it, when speak- ing or writing of those with whom we agree ?
