Josk Domingo, a New Orleans cigar im porter, who died on Sunday, left a large fortune to his friend Wm. H. Hunt, ex Secretary of the Navy, and now United States Minister to Russia. This makes Hunt, who has heretofore been in somewhat embar- rassed circumstances, one of the wealthiest men in the diplomatic service of the United States.

Four gentlemen, attired a la Oscar Wilde, arrived from Niagara by the “Chicora,” yes- terday, and went down the lake on the Mon- treal boat in the afternoon. They wore black velvet knickerbockers and coat. a little velvet cap to match, and long black stockings. They started fr am Boston on a pedestrian tour som: ten days ago, but, it is said, like Mark Twain in his tramp, they have never lost an oppor tuaity to ride.

Atoné with his popularity in society, it is said that the late Duke of Grafton was uni versally liked as a iandlord. He let his cottages at rents that were hard!y more than nominal, and tenants he never ejected If he had no ordinary work. for laborers, he found extraordinary work to keep them busy. When his farms, a few years ago, were revalned, he allowed his tenants to name the valuers. They reported that the rent ought to be raised, but the Duke refused to act on their report. During the recent depression there has, therefore, been no necessity to reduce the rents. Not a single farm on the estate is now vacant.

Tue British Canadian Colonization Com pany (Limited) of which the Hon. Alex. Mac kenzie is president, is fully organized with a capital of 31,000,000, all of which was sub. seribed in a few days. About $1,000,000 acres Of laud have been acquired jut east of Long Lake in the Qu’Appelie District, North West Territory. The company seems deter mined to push settlement ; already it has had a number of prairie houses built in this city which are being shipped to their intended lecation. The board is composed of the Hon. Alexander Mackenzie, M. P., President; Jas Beaty, Q. C., M. P., Vice-President. George A. Cox, Esq., President Midland Railway Company; Robert Jaffray, Esq., Vice- Presi dent Lacd Security Company; Major Fred C. Denison, Toronto. The board has selected a3 maoager Mr. F. J. Stewart, who has been a director in the Land Security Company, an experience which will now be serviceable.
