a — = The Moncton 7'imes says Mr. S. Bairnsfather and party of Scottish Vocalists returned to Moncton Monday aight after an extended tour through New BrunsWick, Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. The trip was quite success- ful and the Company report having had a good time and meeting with a hearty recep- tion, since Wa. Lervrcey, Esy., showed us, the other day, a fine collection of ore and quartz of dif- ferent kiads, which he had just received from one of his sons, who is at present in Colorado. Several of the specimens resemble very closely some of the quartz that has been palmed off on the people as having been found in different parts of this Province. This looks signiticant. — Sum. Tue Hon. Neil McLeod has sold his fine filly, one year and two and a half months old, to Mr. Duncan Campbell, of Pictou, N. &., for the handsome sum of §150.C€9. The filly is by Hernando, and its dam was sired by the imported stallion Don Juan. In appearance and action the filly much resembles her sire, Hernando, and the indications are that she will make a good goer.

Care Wore Gotp Mine.—Mr, James Hughes, jr., has imported the machinery for operating the Cape Wolfe gold mine, It ar- rived ftom Baltimore via Halifax in the ‘‘ M. A. Starr,’ yesterday, and was shipped by train thie moruing to Cape Wolfe. Professor Camille Bezanton, of Baltimore, arrived on Wednesday night. He will set up the mochinery and superintend the mining opera- twons. We Wish the enterprise every success.

Cunard & Uo.’s yesterday in honor of the marriage, which took place at 11,30 in the morning at the Bishop’s Chapel, of Mr. Matthew R. Morrow, second son of the late J. B. Morrow, and chief of Messrs. Cunard’s coal department, to Miss Ella, youngest daughter of Mr. W. H. Neal, of Neal, White & Co. To-Nicut the teachers and pupils of the Prince Street School will give a literary and and musical entertainment in the hall of the school building. As the entertainment wil’, doubtless, be a first-class one, and as the object is a really good one, we hope to see the room filled to overfiowing. Sir Ricnarp Cartwericut did not get. the Grit nomination in Lennox -after all. The party nominated Mr, Allison. It is said there is a movement on foot to secure for Sir bichard a seat in South Huron, and to this end Mr. McMillan the present representative will resign. The Grit party is badly off for a financial leader in the House, and if Sir Richard will be of any service to them he should be given aseat. Mr. Patterson was the financial leader last session and he cut a sorry figure.

Tue notorious Sam Pine, the assailant of Miss Slocum in North Salem, N. Y., who was sentenced to State prison afew days ago for four years for burglary and horse stealing. broke jail in Bridgeport, Conn,, on the night of the 2nd inst., and escaped. He sawed two three-eight inch iron bars on the cell door, pasced up through the corrider, removed the lock from the door of the work-room, and thence got through the scuttle. The escape was not discovered until the following morn- ing. The sheriff has scoured the county, but is unable to get any trace of him, and has offered a reward of $1,000.

A visit to Messrs. McKinnon & McLean’s Esdale Foundry shows that enterprising firm to be alive to their business, On entering the casting house we noticed a balance wheel seven feet eight inches in diameter, and four- teen inches fave, just out of the sand, which weighed three thousand five hundred pounds, This is the largest casting ever made on the Island, and is intended for a forty horge-power engine which the firm are byilding for a concern in NoyaScotta. They have in conrse of construction several large boilers — one specially fine one of tifty horsepower, made «f ateel, for the engine referred to above. Mr. McLean informed us that they would soon start on an eighty horse-power steel boiler, for the Charlottetown Woollen Company, which will be five feet in diameter and sixteen feet long.~-Sum, Jour.

She immediately docked at the north wharf in the dockyard, which was visited by a large number of officers, and several ladies. The ship has make a fine passage, the only rough worther reported being just after leaving Ber- muda, the rest of the voyage was fine and un- eventful. During the voyage the wife of Quarter-Master Sergeant McArthur, of the Royal Engineers, who had been ill when she embarked, died. The corpse was brought here, where it will be buried. ——_»—_ +

Mr, Patt hada very difficult and disagreeable part to per- form, one which instead of winning the plaudits of the audienge, receives its hisses, and throughout the whole performance he acted admirably.
