Tueornitus CHapPe. (alias ‘‘nosey’’) en- tered the tin store of Mr. William b. Allin yesterday evening, purchased a coffee-pot from the clerk, and concealing it under his coat’he quickly left the store. Sergeant McGregor, who was standing at the station door, attracted by the peculiar .manner in which he made his exist, enquired what he purchased, and the clerk informed him it was 2 coffee-pot. ‘The officer followed Chappell and found that along with the coffee-pot he had also a tin pan. He was taken to the station, and this morning remanded to jail to await trial on Monday.

A large, influential and enthusiastic meeting-was held on Wednesday evening last at the Court House, Dundas—Donald Morrison, Esq., in the chair.

The candidates were present and ad- dressed the meeting. Speeches were also delivered by Wm. Welsh, Esq., J. G. Sterns, Esq., and others,

It was moved by Mr. Hunter, seconded by Mr. John McDeugald—

“That A. C. McDonald, Esq., and Dr. Muttart be nominated to represent King’s County in the Dominion House of Com- mons.”

Dr. McIntyre and Mr. McFayden were also nominated.

The meeting then divided, when seven- eighths of the electors present voted for McDonald and Muittart.

The Notre Dame Cathedral was crowded in every part vesterday, during the funeral ceremony on the occasion of the amniver- sary of the death of Thiers. About 8,000 persons gained admission to the edifice, and large numbers were in the streets, but there was no confusion or disorder. After the ceremony, Madama ‘Thiers went to the cemetery of Pere La Chase, where there was a great demonstration of floral offerings at Thiers’ tomb.

Dear Srr,—On Monday last it was rumored that a political meeting was to be held at Victoria Cross on Tuesday evening. But no notice of such meeting was to be seen, and no person seemed to know anything: definite about it. Besides,as it wasunderstood that the Opposition candidates. would be in Charlotte- town at the Liberal-Conservative meeting there on that evening, we came to the con- clusion that it was only rumor after all. Towards evening on Tuesday there seemed to be unusual activity in the camp, Officials were seen hurrying to an fro, attired in their best, carrying pamphlets, budgets and docu. ments of all descriptions. Some one suggested that they were holding ‘‘Penny Readings” in aid of the Secret Service Fund, somewhere. The long procession being organized, mar- shalled by our worthy Postmaster and the famous Joseph Campbell bringing up the rear, moved onward in the direction of Victoria Cross. Some of our Conservative friends thought it expedient that we should go and vatch the proc eding of this ominous pro- eession should they really be holding a mect- ing under such sneaking and underhand cir- eumstaneces. Oa our arrivalat Victoria Cross we found that were assembled about 120 elec- tors, and Mr. Malcolm MeFayden ou the platform vehemently denouncing the policy pursued by Sir John and his followers. By his side sat Morah Rowe, Esq., Dr. Robert- son, Roderick Munroe, Esq., (of Georgetown), who each in turn vented their wrath against the policy of the Conservatives, thinking that in the absence of beth Conservative candi dates they would misrepresent their policy with impunity.

A few of the Liberal-Couservative electors seeing the undue advantage taken of their men, took up the cudgels in defence of the Op- position; and, notwithstanding the formidable array of ‘‘ Old stagers’’ that were against them, they cornered their opponents in a sur prising manner. Judging from the marked at- tention with which they were listened to, and the hearty applause that greeted each of the Opposition speakers as they took their seats, there must have been five to one in favour of the Conservative candidates.

It was moved by Mr. John MeQueer, and seconded by Mr. Malcolm Martin and several others. ‘‘ that A. C. McDonald, Esq. and Dr, Muttart be our candidates for the Dominion House of Commons.” Mr. McFayden suggest- ed that some person should put him (McF.) in nomination, but no one responded. The Con- servatives then asked that their motion be put to the meeting, but the Chairman refused to do 30, giving no satisfartory reasons for his con- duct. ‘he Conservatives agai urged that a division be taken, but the Chairman, prompt- ed by the Grit leaders, again refused, knowing that they were shamefully in the ininority. Three aheers were then given for tie Chair- man, three cheers for Sir John, and three rousing cheers for McDonald! and Muttart, and the meeting dispersed,

Thus, after all their drumming up of forces, their army of officials, their formidable array of platform orators, this Grit meeting resulted in a signal yictory for the Conservatives. Yours, ete.,
