Two meetings were held the other night. Want to ' know what they were about? well, finally, the Univer— sity has decided to inst— ~all a new furnace in Mari- on Hall. It is hoped that , this will alleviate the 'two climatic zones now ex- isting: the sweltering tr- opics and the frigid north. However, this requires the girls from Marion to move to Bernadine Hall. This little move across the st- reet can cause a lot of inconvenience to the Mars ion Hall girls. They must bid farewell to Marion on or before Decembéry21, the last day of exams. As eve eryone knows, moving is exhausting, noisy and time consuming. This moving of Marion Hall girls now, shows little concern for the girls in either resi— dence. The noise of moving will not only affect those girls in Bernadine study- ing for exams, but also 1 those in Marion who have not as yet moved. Studying for exams is exhausting & frustrating enough without .having something else equ- ally exhausting and frus- trating to do. Time plays -a big role in this too. On Tue., Nov. 13, the gi- rls in Marian Hall were called together to be in- formed of the university's plan to install a new hea- ting system in their resi— dence° On that same night the girls in Bernadine Ha- ll were called together to be informed that as a re- _ sult of this plan their family«was going to become larger, and by 53 new sis- ters. Marian Hall has had. a severe heating problem for a few years with very cold temperatures in some_ rooms, very hot tempera-~ tures in/other rooms and

a very loud, obnoxious, unrythemic, beat of bang- ing and.clanging, that co- uld sweep over the build- ing at the most inconven- ient times (mostly after the’last sheep was counted

Most of those on fourth floor are juniors and sen- iors. Surely upper-class- men have some rights! The girls in Marion would very much like to stay together and occupy the same floor. This is so they can stay with the people they know and like the best. Surely they too have rights! The fourth floor would probab- ly be the one they would occupy as there are fewer living on fourth than on any other floor. Until th— is internal problem is so- lved, it would be inane to move from Marion to Berna— dine now, only to pick up your stuff once more and move to another designated room in Bernadine.

Finally there is the inc— onvenience to those people in Marion who are in pri— vate rooms and to those in

going over the fence).The- re were many complaints from the occupants in the building about this situa— tion both last year and this and it was felt by hooking up to the new hea- ting system in the.utility building that this problem would be alleviated. How- ever, such was not the ca- se.

Thus the business office decided that they should do something about it and the time was ripe to und- ertake the job for the fo- llowing reasons:

Bernadine who were unfor— tunate enough not to have been able to obtain a sin- gle room. Instead they we- re given a double room\to live in by themselves.‘Now they have been given a fo- ur day notice with the op- tions of stalking the cam— pus and finding a roomate by Friday, or having one assigned to them. How un— fortunate when all they wanted was a room to them- selves and not a "sister"!

The residents 'mf Marion Hall were, by some quirk of fate not.informed of the possibility of a move this semester when they entered residence life in September. Surely such an intellegent man as Mr. Mac Lean, must have conceived of the possibility of al- tering the heating system in Marion prior to Sept. But then we all know that winter works programs are cheaper!!!

Come, don't you think it could have waited until May to fix the furnace or couldn't it have been fix— ed last summer? It's been this way for at least five years that I know of, so what's a few more months? But then again what's a £92 of inconvenience to the girls on campus?!!!

3. The space is available on campus to accommodate those who have to move.

Rennovations are to begin sometime in late December& it is expected that it wi— take anywhere from two to three months to complete.. From the residents' point of view it is an inconven-. ience because it means pa— cking their grip in mid- year and relocating and readjusting to a new life style.

All this has been taken into consideration and all I can promise is that we will try to make the cha— nge as smooth and as comf— ortable as possible. The move is a permanent one which means that the girls moving from Marian Hall will not be returning the— re during the second term. On the other hand, it also has a few positive 'over- tones in that it will be a new experience and there- fore has a certain air of excitement to it. Some of the girls who only plan on living here for one year also have the opportunity of living in Bernadine Ha- 11, an experience they otherwise would have miss- ed. It will require a lot of giving and taking on all sides and I must say I appreciate thus far, the manner in which it has be-
