There have been sev- eral requests, however, for an ex- planation of a statement in Culb- crston books that a small slam can be made under certain eon. ditlons when declarer has only two trumps, with only two more in d"mmY-so here is proof of that statement. could actually reach six spades in a serious rubber or duplicate game! (Perhaps he meant to cue- bid the spade suit, and before he knew it. he was in six; then he forgot to take himself out to six notrump!) This is not a serious hand- the idea is merely to show the possibilities.

so, we're assuming that the con- tract is six spades by South, West could be 'mean" and open a trump -but let's suppose further that he prefers to open the club queen. Can South fulfill the contract? Yes-as follows:

Peter prefers bushes to trees, places like the Old Future and the dear Old Bria: patch. of course. That is the best place of III. But he does like to visit the Green Forest. It is curiosity. Yes. sir. that is what it is. He wants to know what is going on there, and perhaps now and then get a glimpse of some of the folks who live there and maybe make the ac- quaintance of some of them. Some folks like to boast of the people they 'know' when really they have no more than a speaking acquaint- ance. You know how it is.

Now Peter's big cousin, Jumper the Hare. he whose coat is white in winter and brown in summer. prefers the Green Forest. .especi- ally such parts of it as have plenty of young evergreen trees beneath which are hiding places in which it is easy to keep out of sight. He doesn't like open country, and he never crosses the Green Meadows to the dear Old arinrpntch. Peter may come to see him. but he doesn't go to see Peter

Peter was tagging along at his cousin's long heels when they came to the foot of a tree that looked uke a perfectly healthy tree some- one had started to try to cut to pieces. Anyway, around the foot oi were chips and splinters of fresh- ly cut yellow wood. They were not at all the sort of chips to be found around old stumps, or at the foot of a dead tree. They had the bright, fresh look oi the chips left by the ax of a woodcutter who had chopped 1: living tree.

Peter looked up. Not very high. not very far above his head when sitting up, was a great hole cut into the trunk of that tree. Look- ing higher he saw two or three more holes, not so big and not -50 deep. Such a mess as some one had made of that treel Jumper noticed the look on Peter's face.

"Logoouk," said Jumper.

"What?" asked Peter, looking puzzles.

"Logcock the Woodpecker," re- plied Jumper.

"What about him?" asked Pe- ter.

"He did that," replied Jumper- nodding toward the holes in the
