SU President’s Message

Although it feels like we've just arrived - back from Christmas break, the countdown is on and the end of another school year is only a few months away. Realizing this, we've kicked it into high gear at the Student Union and have a number of proj- ects to complete before the end of the semester. We have had a successful year- to-date, and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in our activities. There is definitely a new sense of spirit and Panther Pride visible on campus. The year has been great in both our on campus and off campus activities. This year we had the opportunity to meet with govern- ment on a number of occasions, bringing to the table a number of issues from Student Loans to providing a fully funded tuition freeze for the upcoming year. These are major issues, ones that the Student Union will continue to focus on over the rest of the semester. The new W.A. Murphy Student Centre has been well uti- lized by students. It has met our expecta- tions, and has truly become the hub of campus, providing a much needed social spot for students to call their own. It has also provided us with a new means of communication with students, which has had an impact on many different areas in our campus community. As the year winds down, my time with the Student Union is quickly running out. I would like to thank each and every one of you for the support you've given me during my term as President. It has truly been an honour to serve you. The experience I have had over the past few years at the Student Union will never be forgotten. As we approach elections for the upcoming year, I encour- age all students to consider becoming involved with this great organization. Make the most out of your university experience... Work Hard, Play Hard, Get Involved!

VP Activities Message

This academic year has been one of change — positive change. Fuelled by the opening of our W.A. Murphy Student Centre, involvement with student groups and activities has been trending upwards at an incredible pace. With students, faculty, and staff alike choosing The Wave as a preferred destination for socializing, a sense of community and friendship is strengthening evermore.

The number of clubs and societies on cam- pus is on the rise. The recent presence of Amnesty International here at UPEI is giv- ing students a chance to speak out against the abuses of human rights occurring throughout the globe. We are now seeing these unique groups as a supplement to the growing assortment of departmental soci- eties. I would like to thank all those who have dedicated their time over the year, to promote extracurricular involvement here at UPEI. Your hard work allows an avenue in which students can gain an enriched post-secondary education.

Numerous strides have been made this year by The Cadre staff and volunteers, to better ensure that UPEI's Student Newspaper effectively addresses the issues that are of student interest. As well, Yearbook staff have been working diligent- ly throughout the year which solidifies the Panther will be "Back in Black" for 2002/2003.

As we make our way through the first year of the W.A. Student Centre's operation, become an active member in your campus community. There are countless ways to enjoy UPEI outside the classroom... have fun!

Executive Vice President’s Message

WELCOME BACK!!!Wow!!! Can you believe that first semester is already through? The year is flying by. This past semester we've done lots of great stuff. We seem to be gaining some ground with

the government's Student Loan Program. I think they are realizing that the maximum just isn't high enough. Feb 4th and 5th we were out camping in the cold "freezing for the fees" It was a great time. Lots of fun and lots of snow!!! On the 5th we marched down to Shaw Building to gain public awareness on our increasingly high tuition.

This semester we want to try to raise awareness about fair trade by handing out some fair trade coffee to all of you coffee lovers. And since February is the love month...we will be selling candy grams in support of aids research, so this is your chance to send that special someone some CHOCOLATE!!!

It is also time to nominate your favourite Professor for the prestigious "people's choice" or better know the Student Union Faculty of the Year Award. To nominate your favourite professor contact me for the details. One more thing to think about... it's that time of year to start thinking about Student Union elections. If you are inter- ested you can contact any of the Executive and we would be glad to answer any ques- tions you may have!!! With only a short, , .. time left before the reading break, take care and have a wonderful break.

Welcome to UPEI! !

The Student Union wishes to extend a warm welcome to Phaidra Ruck. Phaidra will be working in the Student Union office until March 2003. Phaidra is from Katimavik. She joins us from Vancouver, British Columbia. Along with her other Katimavik buddies she will be travelling all over Canada during the next seven months. Katimavick is a wonderful pro- gram for anyone who wants to live life from a different perspective. Be sure to _ drop by the Student Union office and visit Phadria. She definitely has some very interesting stories to tell! Let's show her some of our famous "Panther Hospitality". Welcome to the UPEI Student Union Phadria!
