New ZEALAND advices state that five Wesleyan missionaries have been murdered and eaten by the Bush natives near Mali- cola coast. Eighty of the tribe were killed by the Malicola traders and Coast natives in retaliation.

AvusTRALIA has carried off the highest diploma for wheat at the Paris Exhibition. She gained a prize for each of several sam- ples of wheat and flour. Adelaide wheat gained the gold medal at the London Exhi- bition of 1851.

‘‘THe steamer from Pictou did not arrive until one o’clock this morning, having been delayed at Pictou by the gale.” So says the Patriot. This is drawing upon the im- agination rather severely. The steamer has not yet arrived.

A pespatcn to the St. John T'elegraph says that Stephen H. Chandler, eldest son of Governor Chandler, was thrown from his carriage, while on his way from Sack- ville to Dorchester, breaking his neck and dying instantly.

THE FALL MEETING at Upton Driving Park takes place on the 24th and 25th inst. Five hundred dollars are offered in prizes,to be competed for on that occasion. This meeting will, no doubt, be the most suc- cessful ever held at Upton.

Wuew! Wrinpratts.—It is reported in Richibucto that Mr. George J. Forbes, for merly school teacher at Kouchibouguac, has fallen heir to a fortune of a million dollars by the decease of a relative in California. We hope the report is correct.

A very elaborate copy of the address presented by the members of the Benevo- lent Irish Society to Lord Dufferin on the occasion of his visit to this Province, has been executed in colors, by Messrs. Brem- ner Brothers, of this city. It will be for- warded to His Lordship before his depar- ture from Canada.

In the Prince Street Methodist Church the service, at 10.30 to-morrow, will be conducted by Rev. B. Chappelle, M. A., of the St. John Germain Street Church ; and in the evening the Rev. Dr. Burns, of Halifax, pastor of Fort Massey Church,may be expected to officiate.

Two Stices From one Loar.-—Mr. Paul Lee, of this city, had a Tubular Well put in last week at his new house. He has one at his steam factory thirteen feet deep, put in last year, which is pumped by steam daily. Jones’ Wells and Pumps are coming in favor fast. This dry time is what will test them. His office is opposite Dr. Jenkins’. —fri and sat.

A NOVEL experiment is about to be made by the Post Office authorities in Liverpool. It is proposed to provide boxes at any offices, shops, or private houses where they may be desired, in order that letters may be posted without having to be taken out of the prem- ises. The letters will be collected six times during the day, and the charge for each box has been fixed at £10 per annum.

Farewett Services.—Special sermons will be preached in St. James’ Church on Sabbath, the 13th inst., by the Rev. Dr. Burns, Halifax, and the Rev. Thomas Duncan, Halifax, on the occasion of the congregation abandoning the use of the old church for public worship. A solemn and impressive season is expected. The new Church will be opened on Sunday, the 20th inst.

Tue Patriot says: ‘‘ How is it thata few weeks ago Mr. Pope could see one of the sturdy yeomanry or a horny-fisted son of toil about three blocks away, when now he fails to perceive one at a yard’s distance from him?” May we ask another ques- tion? Why was it impossible to see the editor of the Patriot even ‘‘three blocks away” for some weeks after the 17th Sep- tember? Everyone who knows Mr. Pope will realize the fallacy of the Patriot’s paragraph.

Tue following are the appointments made by the moribund Grit Government :— Judge Taschereau, of Kamouraska District, has been elevated to the Supreme Court Bench, vice Justice Taschereau, resigned. Henri Taschereau, ex-M. P., will become Judge of Kamouraska District. Mr. W. Buckingham, the Premier’s Secretary, has been appointed Deputy Minister of the In- terior. Mr. LLaframboise, ex-M. P. , has been appointed Judge of the District of Gaspe. Mr. -Weatherbe, of Halifax, has

appointed to the vacant judgship in Nova Scotia. Mr. H. J. Hubertus has been appointed inspector at Ottawa.

To the Editor of the Hxeaminer.

Srr,—Our reason for not immediately re- plying to your first notice relative to glass for the Asylum was, that we wished to ex- amine the matter thoroughly before writing.

At the time of our reading your article, we were unaware that any glass had been placed on the Asylum grounds, no notice of the fact having been given us, either written or verbal, by Messrs. Dodd & Rogers, and we imagined that the glass had not yet arrived from England, or else was warehoused in the city awaiting delivery.

After enquiring, we found that nine boxes of glass, out of 250, the pro- bable quantity of material required, had been, aday or two previous, sent to the Asylum grounds. We then examined the boxes of glass for the first time, and im- mediately sent the following letter to the contracting parties:—-

** Messrs Dodd & Rogers.

JENTLEMAN,—Our attention was called, by a paragraph in the Examiner of Oct. 8th, stating that glass had been delivered by you in fulfillment of your contract with the Government, for supplying material for the New Insane Asylum.

** We find that nine boxes of glass,marked Chance’s 2-32 and 2-26 have been placed in ashed on the Asylum grounds, the de- livery of which we have received no notice whatever of, but suppose the article in ques- tion is from your firm. We hereby give you notice that no material will be received or any certificate granted for the same in ful- fillment of your contract with the Govern- ment but that which is equal in weight and quality to the samples tendered from, and now in our possession.

‘‘We wish you to make all due haste to fulfill your contract in a satisfactory man- ner, as the builders at the Asylum have all their window sashes nearly ready for glaz- ing.

‘‘We remain, “Yours, etc., “Srrrting & Harris.”

Now, the ExamMIneR must not imagine that if it had not cried wolf, the sheep would have been stolen. Our attention to the glass would have been called as soon as we had received notice from Messrs. Dodd & Rogers that the material had been placed on the Asylum grounds for our written certificate, stating that the glass delivered was equal in all particulars to the samples tendered from, would be required by the Government before any money could be paid by them ; so that we should have had to make examination of the glass before any of itcould be used in glazingsashes. We can, therefore, assure the public that glass of an inferior quality to the samples ten- dered from has not been received by us for the Government, nor will be received ; and in fairness to those who tendered, the samples of glass in our office, may be ex- amined by interested persons to see that they are equal to the description in the specification.

An Ottawa telegram reports that a se- rious disagreement has arisen between Mr, Laflamme and Mr. McKenzie, the former refusing to meet the latter before he left for home. The Rouges strongly condemn Mr. McKenzie, and complain bitterly that he has deceived them throughout with refer- ence to the result in Ontario. They threaten to choose a new leader, and if opposed by the Ontario contingent, to occupy a neutral
