The Woolwich Arsenal me did the shift in 4m, 32s. They gained a slight advantage over the Canadians up to the time that the trun- nions should have fallen into their beds, when it was found that the trunnions were out of place, aid the time lost in fitting the gun on the carriage gave the Canadians the victory. Both squads were enthusiastically cheercd on the ground,and again on entering the camp. ‘This is the first time tivat the ‘‘ go as you please ” shift has been performed b; volunteers at’ Shoe- buryness, although it has been for many years practiced by the regulars. ‘The¥4 Canadians are favorites in the camp, and every one is pleased ai their success in-the competition.

A MOUNTAIN IN THAT. PRISKY BURSTS INTO FLAMES. A voleanic eruption took place in the eide of the mountain south of the south fork of the Ulearwater River, about twenty miles east of Mount Idaho, Tuesday, the 9th inst., sending forth a column of fire and smoke several huodred feet in height and rocks which fell at a distance of sev- éral miles front the plece of -the ernption. A Dynamite Convention.
MEETING OF ROSSA MEN—THEY DECIDE TO DESTROY THE BRITISH MARINE.
The so-called. Dynamite Council of Irish- men, of which O’Donovan. Rossa is the alleged head, met in seeret in New York on the 21st., for the purpose of perfecting their organization and completing p.ans for the @eStruction of English shipping all aver’ the world. After consideFable dis: enssion, which was stormy, violent mea- sures toward England were advocated, and a proclamation was adopied, of which the following is the substance :—-‘‘ The Irish are scattered all over the world, and the English flag flaunts in every harbor of the world. The Irish people could destroy it wherever it floats and thus pay back that vengeance with which England thanked God she had rooted the Irish people out-of Ireland. Take for ‘example this port of New York. The lrish of New York could, in one-night, blow up every ship of Eng- land that wasin the harber, and do the same in Halifax, Boston, San Francisco, Sydney, and in every other port frequented by English shipping. By the time afew hundred English merchant vessels had been destroyed, the. world may witness the ‘eneficial sight of all the shipping mér- chants and insurance companies of England presenting petitions to Glad- stone to reconsider the Lrish question. After sontinuing in this strain for some time, the “ Council volunteers the folldwing. ‘* The Council expresses the opinion, that after” September Ist, it will be for all peaceable people to avoid ships that sail undér the protection of the English flag.” The Counon having seompleted their plans for the destruction of every ship sailing under the English flag, adjourned.
