The Miners’ Strike.

The strike of the Miners is becoming general. The plans laid down at the Manchester conference of Miners have been generally adopted. Meetings ar: being held in all the leading districts in England and Wales and the strike will be felt in all quarters. Yesterday, twenty thousand Yorkshire miners notified their masters, that unless the proposed rate of increase was conceded, the miners would strike in a body.

Much satisfaction is experienced here overthe news that the Russian Govern- ment has decided to return a large number of confiscated estates to the original owners.

The Arcticexpeditionary vessels ‘‘Louise’’ and ‘‘ Varma” on the way to Yenesei are in a dangerous position in the ice at the Kara Sea. Fears are entertained of the safety of the crews of the vessels.

Irish National Conference, Another Meeting Called,

Parnell has notified the supporters of the Conference that a meeting will be held shortly before the re-opening of Parha- ment, and that important matters of busi ness will be discussed regarding Irish aftairs in Parliament; as well as the general con- dition of the Irish people. The Dwyer im- prisopment case will be taken inte con- sideration, and a plan of action concerning the same adopted. Healy, Brennan, and Harrington have been sppointed Honorary Secretaries ; Biggar and Webb have been appointed Honorary Treasurers of the Irish National Land League.

[The following is an epiteme of Mr. Par- neil’s speech at the Conference:—He de- clared that he wished to reaftirm his first utterance on a public platform—namely, that until the people of Ireland attained the right to make their own laws those laws would never be in accordance with their wishes. No solution of the land question could be fina! that did not secure to farmers the right of becoming owners of their hold- ings by purchase. He estimated that a fair anendment of the Healy clause would re- sult in an average of twenty per cent further reduction in the judicial decrees

Railway, with a party of friends, arrived at Lakin, Kansas, fiiteen drunken cowboys, led by F. A. Mead, a discharged telegraph operator, began shooting through the car windows, breaking eight in one car and seventeen in the sleeper and five in the special car. By lying on the floor the passengers escaped the bullets. The sheriff with a hundred citizens from Dodge City, were sent to Lakin, and captured Mead and two of the cowboys. The posse is in close pursuit of the others.

ENGINEER Bart is now engaged repairing the Silsby engine at the Fire Station on King Street. Though yet comparatively new, the Silsby did a great deal of work, and her boiler and tubes have suffered considerably. The repaira being made are extensive, and when completed by Mr. Batt the silsby will, we learn, be as good as new.

A Leeacy of the war in central and south- ern Georgia is a plant, called by the people Egyptian clover. -It was unknown there be- fore, but grew up inthe track of the armies. It is very hardy, killing out weeds and other forage plants; it is highly esteemed by the fermers, who consider the best feed they have for stuck of all kinds, and makes a fine pasty- age where nothing of value grew before.

He for one would have declined to obey such dictation. On whatever points they might have differ- ed, they had agreed to leave the issue to the Irish people. Despite the most tyrannical coercion act the world has ever seen they would yet attain the measures on which they had set their hearts.

THE MONTR&AL FAILURE,

Monrreat, Oct. 21.

At the meeting of the creditors of A. & C. J. Hope & Co., importers of iron and heavy hardware, whe failed here last Tuesday, it was found that the failure was mainly due to depreciation in the value of the stock, and the immediate obligations which had to be met in England. The de- ficiency amounts to $97,855. Indirect liabilities are $221,279; over $200,000 re due tothe Bank of Commerce and ‘ais is covered, to some extent, by busines pape: of an exceptionally good character—chiefly from wholesale dealers.

[The business was established in Mon- trea! in May, 1871, by the removal there of the Toronto branch of Adam Hope & Co., o! Hamilton. The firm dealt mainly in pig iron, lead, copper, bar iron and tin. It is not known whether the parent hou-e in Hamilton will be seriously affected ly the failure; their last statement showed a surplus of $80,000. The death of Hon. Adam Hope, it is supposed, precipitated the en barrassment of the Moutreal branch sonrewhat,

Chambers, in the Law Courts Building, in said Province, atthe hour of eleven o'clock in the forenoon, and I do farther order that & copy of this order, together with a notice from the Liquidators of the said Company, specifying the amount due from such contri- butory, ip respect of such call, be served on all such contributories by posting the same in @ letter prepaid and registered in the General Post Office, in Charlottetown, in said Proviuce, addressed to ithe party or parties contributories, at his, her or their last known address, or place of abode, or by the delivery thereof, severally, to the attorney of the part) to be served.

And I do further order that a copy of this order be published in the Royal Gazette news- paper of said Province, and in Tus Examiner and Patriot newspapers, published in Char. lottetown in said Province, in the daily issues thereof, for two weeks from the date thereof,
