He Turns Ur Acaty.—The Philadelphia Record says that the meanest man in the world lives in that city. He has forbidden the 100 girls in the store to wear laced shoes for this reason: ‘The laced shoes become un- tied on an average five times a day, and it takes two minutes to tie them again; sv each girl loses ten minutes a day and 100 girls lose 1000 minutes, which makes 16 hours per day, or two day's work. Some Sratistics.—The total number of im- migrants who have passed through the Do- minion immigration office at Montreal since January to date is 32,676. The total amount of money brought by them (not, of course, including those who went to the States) figures up $963,659.

The Reporter says: **For an alleged debt which he could not collect from a woman, a man named McLean seized her fifteen months’ old child on Friday last and refused to give it up until persuaded to by Officer Musgrave on Monday. The man has been arrested. The case will probably be a supreme court one. The pen- alty for such an offence is seven years in the penitentiary.

Birtiarps.—Harvey McKenna, the billiard expert, who delighted the Charlottetown bil- liardists last year, is now in New York, mak. ing arrangements for a series of exhibitions that will ultimately land him on the Pacific coast, which he visited four years ago, and which he thinks will benefit his health. He is not in enviable condition physically, and is a little despondent thereat. Since his arrival in New York he has offered to play a match at straight rail with G. F. Glossop, but the latter declined a meeting.

A Gigantic Swindle. OmauHa, Neb., Nov. 23.

From present appearances the Valpara- iso Bank failure is one of the most gigantic swindles and defalcations ever known in this quarter. It develops that Scoville, one of theowners, has altered many of the notes payable to the bank, making the amounts much more than they really were, and that he then deposited these notes with other banks as collateral for money with which to speculate. The notes which were paid aud which should have been cancelled have been used in the same manner. Scoville and Cratts, after confidencing business men of this city and their friends out of as much money as possible, suddenly decamped, and it is thuught they are nuw in Canada. No statement of the assets oan be made as yet, but they are undoubtedly small.
