rhe Senate Railw ay Committee met yes- terday morning, but not one of the witnes- ses summoned appeared. Inspector O'Leary reported that he had searched Montreal after Armstrong, but he could not find him Subsequently Armstrong telegraphed from the American Hotel that he would suit his vewn convenience and attend on Wednes- day. He will probably be placed under arrest when he arrives for disobeying the committee’s first summons.
Hon. Mr. Garneau, member of the (Juebec Government, telegraphed that his health would not permit his attendance hut he would send a doctor’s certificate. Mr. Garneau will probably be brought to Ottawa by an officer of the House, and his State of health will not be considered. . Mr. Thom, seetetary of the Baie des Chaleurs railway company, wrote declining to attend, as the company decided it would cost (vo much timeand money and they were desirous of withdrawirg their bill.
Lonergan, president of the company, wrote to say that he could not come as he hed resolved to move to the seaside’ at Old Orchard Beach, but he would attend after his holiday-on reasonable notice, Jt ig signi- fieant that this witness is getting across the boarder into Maine;

Wuere Dip Tory Come Frou ?— The Market Clerk this morning found a number bf well-scorehed leaves of a seed catalogue in the porch on the north side of the Market Building. The doors of the porch have been locked since last market day,and the leaves must have been put in under the door. Whether they were put in while burning, with the intention of setting fire to the building, or whether they were put in by children after being scorched some- where else, is not known.
Fire.—The house of Duncan McGregor, laborer, near Tea Hill, about two miles from Southport, was, together with its contents, destroyed by fire about three o'clock this morning. There was no one io the house but McGregor at the time of the tire. It appears that McGregor and his wife do not get along very smoothly at times, and last evening Mrs. McGregor left the house to spend the night at a neighbor’s, leaving her husband’s supper ready for him when he came home. Mrs. McGregor says her husband has several times threatened to burn down the house.
Tue Cominc Evenr.—The grand athletic tournament and firemen’s sports to be held on the Charlottetown Driving Park on August 24th promises to be the biggest affair ever held on the Island. The com- mittee appointed to conduct the affair have about completed arrangements with the railway and steamboat authorities for cheap excursion rates, and everything promises to be # success. The very fact of the beauti- ful stallions ‘‘ Elmo” and ** Golden” giv- ing exhibitions of speed is assurance enough of a large gathering of people. The athletic events at this tournament promise to be more than filled, and already six ‘‘ flyers” have entered for the 300 yard dash. For train arrangements, etc., see another column.
