Ar the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon, Bernard McCarey appeared for assaulting Frederick McLeod, on Spring Park Road, about a month ago. The as- sault was proved, and he was fined $4 and costs or twenty days.

Canaptan Securities iN ENGLAND.— The first week in November showed a con- siderable improvement in Canadian stocks. British Columbia rose 1; Canadian five per cents 2, and all others were steady. Rail- way securities also showed an improvement.

A pictcre taken of the man killed at County Line when coffined, was recognized as that of Joe Steele, son of Angns Steele, of Pisquid Road, near P. McKinnon’s mills. He was a married man. A small sum of money and some clothing is in the charge of J. W. Hughes, Esq., County Line Station.

Severat Civil Service employes at Ot- tawa, including a number of extra clerks in the Finance Department, have been notified that their services will not be required. Four permanent clerks in the Department of Agriculture were dismissed on the 23rd, including a nephew of the Minister of Agri culture. The clerks referred to were made

permanent in June.

Royal Family Quarrels.

Dissensions within and without appear to be the order of the day in the Russian Imperial Family: Prince Alexis has quar- relled with the Grand Duke Constantine upon the Administration uf naval matters, and has positively refused to go on active service during the period his uncle retains the post of High Admiral of the Russian navy. Notwithstanding the interposition of the Czarewitch, all efforts to bind up the wound have proved abortive.

To the Editors of the Island Papers :

GENTLEMEN,—A man recognized as one Steele, who worked in Georgetown at one time, was killed at County Line Station, on Wednesday night, the 20th ult., by being run over by the evening train going west. Anin- quest was held by F. D. Beer, M. D., Coroner for Queen’s County, when the following facts were made known by evidence of Eneas Brenan, Jas. McMahon, passengers, and John Thomson, conductor, M, Wall, M. D., Chas. Hibbot, brakesman, Wm. Bennett, baggage master, and Wm. Grant, news agent, viz: that the deceased man was a passenger on the train from Charlottetown; was very quiet and orderly, and was not drunk; but was seen drinking from a small bottle once or twice from Charlottetown to Couuty Line Station, and was not seen by any person after the arri- val of the train there until he was seen lying dead on the railway track a few yards from the Station House.

From the fact that the man was found some forty yards west of the spot where the passen- ger cars hauled up at the Station, it is evident he (deceased) had got out of the car, and walked forward in the dark unnoticed by any person, and remained out until the train (after having left empty cars on siding ) had got in mo- tion going west, and had rushed to get on board, and had made the attempt to do so be- tween the box cars in advance of the passen- ger cars, as the box cars immediately preced- ing the second-class car (in which deceased was a passenger) was found to jar very unusua'ly by a brakesman who was at the time on the outside tying the bell rope.

The body has not been claimed by any friends, and was interred on Saturday evening, the 23rd inst., in the cemetery at Freetown Chapel. Too much cannot be said of the kindness and assistance rendered on the oc- easion by Wm. McKechnie, Esq., the Superin- tendent, who sent up a magnificent coffin in- closed in another one, and most kindly issued a free pass to friends who would come to claim the body, and otherwise gave such advice and assistance in getting a Coroner and doing for the dead body as will never be forgotten by the people of this place. Mr. McKechnie’s humane and timely assistance was such as made the daty of doing the best that could be done for the dead body and friends, if any could be found, less burdensome on the people in charge.

Tintype pictures of the corpse when dressed and coffined were taken, and can be had by the friends of deceased by making application to John W. Hughes, of this place. —Com.

Daring Attempt at Robbery.

HAGERSVILLE, Ont., Nov. 24.

This morning, between four and five o'clock, the Union Hotel, kept by Mr. Thomas Goodwin, was entered by burglars An entrance was gained through the dining- room window. Immediately on gaining an entrance they proceeded to the room occu- pied by Mr. Goodwin, and were in the act of pulling his pants from beneath his pillow, in which was supposed to be a large amount of money, when he (Goodwin) awoke and at once laid hold of one of them. A _ scuffle ensued, which ended in the burglar drawing a revolver and shooting Goodwin in the neck, inflicting avery dangerous wound. The burglars succeeded in making good their escape. Goodwin now lies in a very

low state. Faint hopes are entertained of his recovery. The burglars are still at large.
