‘ . i Tue desecration of holy places is a crime

not very often punished in_ this city, al- though often committed. We have been informed that a gang of disorderly fellows have, during the past month, used the Protestant Burying Ground,onthe Malpeque Road, as a place of diversion, drinking, etc. They have made it a regular place of meet- img, and have several times insulted persons who go their for the purpose of visiting the the graves of their friends. The police have been informed of the matter and, no doubt, those desecrators will be arrested and se- verely punjshed,

A very important evidence in the Mc- Carthy-Osborne inquest is at present on this Island, in the person of William Cum- mings. He is a person who frequented the Waverly House at and after the time of the murder; who kept company with Annie Parker at the time and after the murder; and who was seen ina bar-room in Shediac shortly after the murder wearing an over- goat which was alleged to be that worn by Fimothy McCarthy on the night of the murder. Such important evidence should not be lost sight of in the present case,

Tuer annual meeting of the Rifle Associa- tion of this Province was held at the Sti- pendiary Magistrate's Court Roem last evening. The following gentlemen were elected as members of Council for the en- auing year : Major Morris, Captains Free- land, Dogherty, McRae and Longworth, for Queen’s County; Captains Price and Ives for Prince County; and Captains McLeod and Owen for King’s. A_ resolution was wnanimously carried endorsing the action of the Council with reference to the charges brought against Private Dover last summer, for using ammunition not issued on the

Ar the Stipendiary ‘iagistrate’s Court, thig forenoon, John Murphy, sailor, was fined $1 and costs for being drunk and in- capable; George Welsh, for the same of- fonse, was fined the same; Chas. O. Wink er appeared on summons for assaulting Wm. Burns. It appears that Mr. Burns entered the bar for the purpose of getting a drink, and while there an altercation occurred be- tween he and the proprietor, who, accord- ing to testimony, struck Mr. Burns two blows on the head. Mr. Winkler was fined $10 and costs. Patrick Brogan and James Fardy were summoned for using obscene language and acting in a very disorderly manner on the streets. They did not ap- pear, and a warrant was issued for their ar- rest.

Tug regulation for the annual drill of 1878-9 are published in the Guzette of the 15th. They provide for drilling 20,000 men and 1,276 horses for twelve days. The company’s strength to be 42 non-commis- sioned officers and men, including staff ser- geants and bandsmen. The pay is as fol- lows : Officers, $1 per diem; non-commis- sioned ofticers and men, 50 cents; horses,7i cents. New Brunswick is to have 1,500 men, Nova Scotia, 2, 000 men; P. E. Island 350. In selecting from corps for drill, field batteries are to be first taken; 2d, garrison batteries having guns for position; 3rd, corps in cities; 5th, corps not drilled last

It is also understood that Lord Loftus is to make inquiries, especially about the mis- sion of the Cimbria.

ANNIE PARESR’S evidence is conclusive on at least one point. It is evident she knows all about the murder. The discovery of the rope and stone to some extent corroborates her testimony against the Osbornes. It will be seen by reference to the report of her evidence, the conclusion of which We publish this even- ing, that she departs in no essential particular connected with the coats from her former sworn testimony. The “‘St John Telegraph” says: ‘‘It must be admitted also, that the sub- stance of her statement and the facts are not irreconcilable, and the fact that blood was found on the inner clothing of the deceased, and none on the outer coats, which were but- toned up to the clin of the dead man, is a very remarkable and a very suggestive circum- stance. On the supposition that the body had been handled after having been put into the river, the slightness of the abrasion on the neck and other matters could be explained.”

The St. John Telegraph says:—‘‘Mr. Tilley has been a model Governor in every respect, Without favoring any party, either Dominion or Provincial, but studicusly favoring the separation of Dominion and Provincial politics, he has been of the greatest service to his Government and to the country, his intimate knowledge of our affairs eminently «qualifying him for the position which he filled and adorned. The social duties devolving upon the Governor have been discharged with liberality and consistency. Mr.. Tittry’s temperance principles never having been compromised under any circumstances.

Russian Losses

The latest estimates of the total force of the Russian armies availadle for service in Bulgaria, Armenia or the Euxine, is 480,- 000 infantry and 60,000 cavalry. It is be- lieved that their losses in the recent war in killed, weunded, missing and sick, will not fal! far short of the most incredible total of 250,000, One correspondent estimates the army in Bulgaria and Roumelia at 250,000 men.
