Tue lialians are not satisfied because they did not get Dalmatia or the Austrians Tyrol, and because England has occupied Cyprus. Italy hopes to be a great maritime power, and does not like being so complete- ly overshadowed.

There has been much fighting between the United States troops and volunteers and the hostile Indians in the Western States. Of course, no matter what success the In- dians obtain as first, they are ultimately vanquished, but at a fearful cost.

Joun H. Mourray’s Crrcus exhibited to an immense audience last evening not- withstanding the disagreeable state of the weather. The performance, from beginning to end, was excellent, reflecting much credit on Mr. Murray as well as sustaining his present great reputation. The ascent on a single wire from the ground to the pole at the booth was witnessed by a great crowd this afternoon.

Tue St. John papers say that cheap ex- cursions to Halifax, Charlottetown, Grand Falls, ete., are the order of the day in that place. We have seldom the pleasure of a cheap excursion from this city. Could not the Railway. Superintendent and Steamboat agents arrange one cheap excursion to St. John on the:occasion of the great boat race between Hanlan and Ross, which takes place on the 25th?

THERE was a large attendance at the Market to-day. Vegetables were in access of demand in the upper department. Prices were similar to those of Friday, and were as follows:—Beef, small, from 5 te: SP as a. OR, ee Se 8 cts.; mutton from 5 to 10 cts.; lamb per qr., from 40 cts. to $1 ; potatoes per bush., from 25 to 30 cts.; do new per quart, from 5 to 6 cts.; peas per qrt., from 16 to 20 cts. ; butter fresh, from 17 to 20 cts.; eggs from 10 to 12 cts.

Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court. . July 18. Ar the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon,: Joseph Valley was fined $3 and costs, or 14 days, for being drunk and disorderly; Thomas Hogan, for the same offense, was fined $2 and costs, or 20 days; Robert White appeared on complaint of Mr. Benjamin Heartz, for trespass. As two others—John McKinnon and Georde Thorne—who also committed a trespass at the same time, did not appear, the case was postponed until to-morrow, and warrants issued for the absentees. The action was, that the three boys above named, entered the garden of Mr. Heartz, and broke several fruit trees. Jnly 19. THERE were two actions for assault tried before the Stipendiary Magistrate this fore- noon. The first was Cen Captain John Hughes and George Welsh. It occurred on board the schooner ‘‘ J. J. Marshall” yesterday, and was the result of a debate on an agreement for wages between the parties named. Walsh being the asshulter, was fined $10 or one months’ imprisonment with hard labor. The second was a prose- eution by Henry Vincent against John Mc- Kinnon for assaulting him at the corner of Queen and Grafton Street, on the 11th inst. 8 days’ imprisonment. +4 AvBURN, July 17. The eight-oared race—three miles—be- tween the Freshmen crews of Cornell and Harvard Universities was won by the for- mer this afternoon, by Time, 17 minutes 6} seconds. Wuee ina, W. V., July 17. The boiler in Davis’ planing mill, at Barnsville, Ohio, exploded this morning, destroying the entire building and killing three persons outright. Three more were

fatally and several badly injured. Loss, $25,000.

On the 17th inst., at the residence of Miss Ducheimin, Sydney Street. after a short ill- ness of a few days, Mrs. P. G. Clark, second daughter of the late Watson Ducheimin, in the 54th year of her age. The funeral will take place to-morrow (Saturday) at 2 p. m.

Public interest in the promised statement by Beaconsfield has attracted a large and distinguished assembly in the House of Lords, including the Prince of Wales and other members of the Royal Family. When 3eaconstield retired there was considerable cheering, and he looked well and betrayed no especial feeling at his brilliant recep- tion.

About five minutes later Lord Salisbury entered, and then Lord Beaconsfield rose amid loud cheering. He said, in laying upon the table protocols of the treaty of Berlin that he should only be doing his duty ( to the House of Parliament and the country by making some remarks upon the policy supported by the British representatives in Congress. He could show that in the changes made in the treaty of San Stefano by the treaty of Berlin that menace to the independence of England had_ been re- moved, and the threatened injury to the: British Empire terminated.

Lord Beaconsfield statement showed thronghout, a strong bias in favor of the Turks, thus he almost apologized for the limitation of the Sultan’s authority in Eastern Russia—his Lordship continuing said ‘‘most competent authorities had con- vinced him that it would have taken 50,000 of Turkey’s best troops to secure any ap- proach to order in Bosnia. Even then the attempt perhaps would have been unsuccess- ful, and such an effort must have secured Turkey’s absolute ruin.

He disclaimed any desire to attribute Austrian occupation to a necessity of sub- mitting to the wishes of the majority of Congress. Austria undertook the occupation at the suggestion of Lord Salisbury, who was earnestly supported by himself. The object in recommending the occupation was to protect the Turkish Government,. who had consistently resisted the principle of the partition of Turkey because, exclusive of the consideration of morality, it believed an attempt at partition would inevitably lead to a long and sanguinary war. The a°- vocates of partition had spoken out. The Government had been taken up into the mountain and shown all the kingdoms of the earth and told ‘‘all these shall be yours if you will only worship Partition.”

This remark of the Premier seems to be an allusion to the proposal which Prince Bismarck is generally understood -to have made, that England would occupy Egypt.

Continuing, he said : ** It was remarkable that, after the great war and prolonged negotiations, all the Powers—Russia as strictly and completely as the others— should come to a unanimous conclusion that the best chance for the tranquility of the world was to retain the Sultan, as a part of the European system.”

He said in conclusion, let Russia keep what she has obtained. England has now said thus far ‘‘and no further.”

Asia is large enough for both Russia and Ergland, there is no reason for constant War or fears of War between them.
