Although I am supposedly the Arts editor for the CADRE and in this position therefore I am required to submit articles in that re— lative field; this week I will dispense with the topic of Arts as such and contri- bute my own personal criti— cisms (negative as positive) on the meeting held last Thursday at the Panther Lounge concerning the role of students in the univer- sity, insofar as the Means and Objectives Committee is concerned.
Not being a mathematician by any streach of the imag— ination I would surmise that roughly 150 — 200 stu- dents were in attendance at the meeting: some stayed for the duration of the meeting while others floated back and forth between cla- sses. ~
The purpose of the meeting was for students themselves to hash out problems and hopefully make proposals in regards to what stand, we as students at U.P,E.I. want to take concerning the M&O Committee of the university. What role does the univer— sity play in regards to stu- dents, community, the island as a whole and is this role (whatever it may be) serving a purpose, and if so what might it be? The topics ten- ded to stray away at times but some (a few) beneficial points were verbalized but not to the extent that I as. a concerned student had (it could be due to the fact that after all, this was the first of such meetings).
Before any course of act- ion can be taken in this regard, I think a few p327 reguisites are of the stud— ents importance! Firstly, the students on campus must be aware of the issue being discussed and before any— thing can result, I think a majority of the students should and must voice their respective opinions at hand!

It only stands to reason that if the majority of students do voice their re— 5pective opinions, something (hopefully) will be done or accomplished and if nothing else it will show that the students at U.P.E.I. are in- deed aware and concerned about what is going on. There seems to be a lot of "lack of communication" among the students on cam— pus concerning the M & 0 Committee issue and this "lack of communication" has been attributed to many things but in general,
"apathy”and the "I really don't give a damn"attitude
have been among the most prevalent. How indeed does one get this type of person
with the above mentioned attitudes to get involved
and concerned? Personally I think this problem can be easily solved~if this type
of individual would stop taking the,attitude "Unless
the university can do some- thing for me individually,
I just won't get involved". Those types I refer to as "self referential maniacs" who to me far exceed the supreme egotistical type of person (in, of course the negative sense) All students should above anything else 1001 upon ourSelves as 225 mass unit — collectively and not as individuals! If the student union or senate pass some sort of law, it doesn't affect us individ- ually but rather if affects the Whole student body of' U.P.E.I. If we ever hope to attain anything here at U.P. E.I. for ourselVes (the stu— dents) we must proceed in the collective fashion to voice our opinions. Only
when we have done this will we be able to go on to the
next step as a whole stud“ ent body; general concerns. Once the majority of students have recognized a problem then we will be able to dee termine what steps we might want to take on any respect- ive issue. -

‘Incidentally while I att- ended the above mentioned meeting, I was engaged in a rather heated argument with a particular female who voi— ced her personal opinion insofar as the "fake" eval- uation committee'election was concerned. She stated \that the people who handled the election were reaction— ary and more or less by ha- ving the election they tur- ned students off in regards to voting and alSo that they (purposely intended) to make fools of the students who voted in the election! I would suggest tb her to_ check her dictionary for the definition of react- ionary it was a very un- apropoe word to use on her part. I triedlmy best to assure her that this in— »deed was not the intention but this particular female whether through her stubb- ‘orness or sheer child-like naiveity or whatever would- simply not‘listen to reason. As was stated in last weeks ACADRE issue, the intent wasflto make the general stu— dent body aware of whom they might be voting for, why, and in general, just be more

aware of their voting prac— tices! I am hopefull that the majority of you can see the reasoning behind the "fake" election. In fact had I voted in the election it surely would have made me initially slightly irr— itated; but in the final analysis it would have made me realize my mistake (after swallowing my pride - which for some is a hard thing to do) and in the future I would definately take much more consideration in regar— ds to my voting practites. Some, maybe a lot of the student body might disagree
