An oft-told tale by the prairie camp-fire,

is that of the skeleton of an indian warrior, found casping the trunk ol a tree! Wakono had horribly perished.

We had no design of giving him to cuch a fate. Without thought had we acted, and though he may have de served | death, we bad not desigued for him such | terrible retribution. Perhaps I was the only one who had any remorseful feeling —but the remembrance of that scalp bedecked shield—the scenes in that Cyp- rian grove—those weeping captives, W ed- ded to a woeful Jot—the remembrance of these cruel realities ever more rose be- fore my mind, stifliog the remorse, | should otherwise have felt for the doom of the ill-starred savage.

His death, though terrible in kind, was merited by his deeds, and was, per- haps, as just as punishments usually are.

Dramatic unity demands the death of Ijurra, and by the band of Hollingsworth. Truth enables me to satisfy the demand.

Ou my return to the camp, I learned that the act was already consummated - the brother’s blood had been avenged !

It was a tragic tale, and would take mapy chapters in the telling. I may not give them here. Let a few particulars suffice.

From that dread night Hollingsworth had found a willivg hand to aid bim 10 his purpose of retribution —one who yearned for vengeance, keenly as himself. Wheatiey was the man.

The two with a chosen party had thrown themselves on the trail of the guerrilla ; and, with Hedro as their guide, had followed it far within the hostile lines. Like sleuth hounds had they fol- lowed it night avd day until they suc- ceeded in tracking the guerrilleros to their lair.

It was a desperate conflict—hand to hand and knife to knife; but the rangers at length triumphed. Most of the guer- rilleros were slain, aod the band nearly annihilated. Ijurra fell by Hollings- worth’s own hand: while the death of the red ruffian, El Zorro, by the bowie knife of the Texan Lieutenant was an appropriate puvishment for the cruelty inflicted upon Condhita.

The revenge of both was complete— though their sorrow was still borne within their hearts.

The expedition of the two Lieutevants was productive of other fruits. In the lair of the guerrilla they found many ptisouers—Yaukees and Ayaukiedos, aud among others that rare diplomatist, Doo Raman de Vargas. Of course the old gentleman was relieved from his involun- tary service with the Guerrilleros, and arrived at the head-quarters of the Am- erican Army, just io time to welcome his fair daughter and future son-in-law from their ante-hymeueal ** tour upon the prairies.

Mr. Thomas I. Russel], one of the best known cabinet-makers and undertakers in Wilmington, Del., says he contracted an exceedingly severe attack of rheumatism this winter. He is subject to the disease, but rarely ever felt it so severely as he did the time now under consideration The disease locat:d itself in his right and foot, rendering that member so stiff and sore that he could not move without endur- ing excruciating pain. St. Jacob's Oil had been so highly recommended that he con- cluded to try it. He has every canse to be glad thathe did s». Two applications of the wonderful remedy gave him entire relief, and he has not been troubled with rheuma- tism since. Mr. Russell says he considers St. Jacob's Oil a very fine remedy for rheu- matism, and now keeps it by him for ready use.
