A Strong Old man.

Not many who berder on 80 years of egewould be able to equal the feat performed by Mr. Angus McCaskill, Islay, of Fenelon, who, in order to be at his post as representative elder at the presbytery meeting on Tuesday, on Monday walked all the way from his home, near Gicnarm, to Sonya, a distance of some 23 miles. The old geatleniun is to be congratulated both for his hale, hearty old age, and for his zeal. Few young men would be ready to follow his example.

Advice To Visitors.

The following are one or two of the

rules and regulations bung up in the;

office of the San Francisco Fire Patrol, for the perusal ef visitors to the establishment :—‘I. Look over the clerk’s shou'der when at work, tell him afew jokes, puoch him in the short ribs, and if this does not have the desired effect, then sing. 2 Put your feet on the most convenient desk or or table; it will be of great assistance tothose who are writing. 3. Profane language is expected at all times, especially when ladies are present. 4. Those having on business should remain as long as possible; short visits will not be tolerated.” Whooping Cough.

Dr. C. R Illingworth writes in The Lancet: “{ have found a_ popular remedy very efficacious in the treat- ment of whooping cough. Il refer to picked oakum, worn by the patient either round the neck in muslin oron the chest as a pad stitched to the under- clothing. Locally I apply the glycerine of tannic acid with a laryngeal brush two or three times a day, and _icter- nally I prescribe one, two or three grain doses of chloral, one two or three minims of belladonna, one grain of alum, and one minim of carbolic acid. in sirup, every two or three hours, A liniment of turpentine, acetic acid, and yolk ofan egg is an excellent appli- cation for the chest, back, and neck, night end morning, with the liniment of balladonna added in the proportion oflte 7. In children of two years or more, I have applied carbolic acid and glycerine, in the proportion of 1 to 15, to the larynx with success, each appli- cation checking a paroxysm at once. With the ahove mentioned treatment I cure the worst cases in from eight to ten days.”

- LP. A Valuable Remejy for Headache.

We desire to cal! attention to a simple, and atthe same time wonder- fully efficient treatment for many kinds of headache, says a medical Journal. We lay no claim to originality, nor do we know who the originator was, but having used it for ayearor more, and in many cases with remarkable results, we feel disposed to give it our endorse- ment, and desire to make it more gen- erally kaown. The remedy is nothing more or less than a solution of the bisulphide cf carbon. A wide-mouth glass-stoppered bottle is half filled with cotton or fine sponge, and upon this two or three drachms of the solution are poured. When occasion for its use oc- curs, the mouth of the bottle is to be ap- plied to the temple or as near as possible to the seat of pain, so closely that none of the volatile vapor may escape, and retained there four or five minutes or longer.

For a minute or so nothing is felt, then comes a senses of tingling, which in a few minates—three or four usually —becomes rather severe, but which subsides almost immediately in the bottle he removed, and any redness of the skin that may occur will also quick ly subside. It may be re-applied, if necessary, several times in the day, and it generally acts like magic, giving im- mediate relief. We believe this was the basis of a once popular nostrum. The class of headaches to which it seems especsally adapted is that which may be grouped under the broad term of “nervous.” Thus neuralgic, periodic and hysterical headaches, and even many kinds of dyspeptic headaches, are almost invariably relieved by it.

True, the relief of a mere symptom is quite another thing from the removal of the cause, yetno one who has had the distress and even agony caused by severe and frequent recurring head- aches (and who has not seen it?) but will rejoice to be able to afford reliof in so prompt and simple a manner ; besides it is sure to secure the hearty gratitude of the patient if he has suffered long. Aste the modus operandi we have nothing more definite than a theory to offer, and thatis that the vapor being absorbed through the skin produces a sedative effect upon the superficial nerves of the part to which it is applied. We know by experiment that its in- fluence is not due to its power as a

counter irritant,

We, however, know that it does act, and if we do not clear- ly sec in what way it acts, that is no more than can be said of several other

/remedies which are firmly established in prosessional favor and confidence.
