Asyium Matters.

It is not eur purpose to haggle about the duties of the Supervisor of the Hos- pital for the Insane. We have under- stood that, under the direction of Dr. Blanchard, the Supervisor has had charge of the Administration Department of the Liospital, and that the Resident Medical Superinteudeut has, himself, assisted by the Matron, overlooked the nursing and care and treatment. of the patients. This is what we iufer from the by-laws; this is what we understood from the evidence given before the Stipendeary Magistrate by Mr. Mulligan; this is what we have been told by one of the trustees; and there is certainly nothing in the wording of the by-law practically meousistent with this. A Supervisor may easily see that the attendants are iu their places and doing their duty, without having anything to do with the performance of their duty,

Whether or not an Assistant Medical Superintendent, or person skilled in. the treatment of lunatics, is, as the Patriot saves, required, is another question—one which the Trustees would, perhaps, do well to consider. In any case, at whaet- ever’ cost, let there ‘never again be a ‘* Manson outrage” or anything like it. We hope that, in future, the greatest care will be taken in selecting attendants ; that when a really good man is obtained he will be retained, if possible; that all irregularities will be carefully inquired into as they may occur, and that censure or ponishment will fall on thoxe conueet- ed with the Hospital Who may be guilty of breaches of discipline.

A GeTLeMAN thoroughly well aequaint- ed wiih the straits between Cape Traverse and Cape Tormentine writes :—

“fF cannot see the danger of a steamer being carried away by the ice unless intentionally or through stupidity. When the straits are full of ice the iceboats do the work. Reported Murd6r at Whim Road. AMAN KILLED WITH AN AXE AFTER A QUARREL,

Tux report of a dreadful murder comes from Whim Road, King’s County. The facts, as far as we can learn, are; ‘Two men named McKinnon and Campbell, commenc- ed to quarrel, and Campbell, who appeared io have got the worst of the fray, seized an axe, and with it struck McKinnon a heavy blow onthe side of the head, knocking him iusensille, in which state he remained for four er five hours. After this time he showed signs of life, but Jater on it was reported that he @icd from the effects of the blow.

McKinnon’s brother-in-law, Mr. Hugh Finlayson, ot the * Northera Light,” was sent for, and left for Whit Road by train yesterday evening. We learn that Camp- bell is still at large.

WiiiramM InmMAn, founder of the.Inman fine of Steamers, died at Birkerhead, Eng- land, a few days ago. He was a native of Liverpool, and after receiving a liberal educa- tiea entered inte mereantile life. In the year 1850 he was a junior partner in the firm of Messrs. Richardson Srothers & Company, shipowners and agents for the Liverpool, New York and Philadelphia Steamship Company, which was formed earlyin that year. Mr, Inman was appointed to manage the shipping department of the business. He it was who inatigurated the idea of offsrding the poorer classes cf emigrants comtortable voyages in si¢amships to America, and at a rate withia their means. The experiment succedded, and theh»rrors of the past, the sailing vessels once cotfined to this branch of the earrying business, were driven out of the trade.

Exposition at Scssex.—On Tueeday, 5th instant, an explosion ‘of gunpowder took place in a play-house erected by soive boys near the Sussex rectory. Inspired by the presence of the artillery imcamp, the beys had been amusing themselves with a toy cannon, and having part of a flask of pow- der left over, one of them threw it into the fire. The'honae was blown to’atoms, and the clothes of the three boys who were in the house at the time pretty badly burned. One of them, Master Charles Arnold, youngest son of Nelson Arnold, Esq., had his arm considerably. burned also, and he and the other two are sufferiag from some sinaller burns. The report was heard for half-a-mile, ‘and to those a few hundred yards away it appeared: like the discharge of a field pisce.
