SIR CHARLES AVERTS A CRISIS.

a crisis in the affairs of the Printing Bur-

sau. It will be remembered that no sup-

ply was voted for the Bureau last session, and as there has been considerable extra work, the vote passed at the session of

1895 had become exhausted. This being

The Auditor- General’s letter was handed to the Premier who hastely read it, and, as ever fertile in resource, made up his mind instantly as to the course he would pursue. He caused the railway authorities to be telephoned to that he might bea few minutes late apd te hold the train. Then sitting down be hurr'elyd shed off a lettert» the Bank of Moutreal, authorizing them to pay any cheques necessary for conducting the business of the Printing Bureau. This letter, which was signed “Charles Tupper, Prime Minister of Canada, personally responsible,” he handed to Dr. Dawson, and wishing him good-bye, hurried off to catch bie train aud meet other difficulties in Nova Scotia. This ended the crisis at the bureau, and the necessary work is

Of course, Mr. Farquharson was only too glad to make the Merchants Bavk of P. KE. L. a political machine, and endorsed the statement of Mr. Davies.

Mr. McLean replied in an effective speech, showing that, notwithstanding the blue ruin speeches of Messrs, Davies and Farquharson, the Merchants Bank of P. E. Island, as shown by their own state- ment, had declared a dividend of 8 per cent., aud made a large profit during the past year. He also pointed out that the lepression in Canada as»compared with that of the United States since that coun- try adopted a trade policy such as the Grit party propose, was a mere bagatelle.

Mr. Scott was the next speaker, and re- ferred ty his residence of three years in t.e United States. He lauded that coun- try and ite progress, but seemed to over- look the fact that protection had made it a great Country.

The history ef the disastrous storm which burst over St. Louison Wednesday night is quickly told. The day was an oppressive one in the city. There was no wind and the people suffered from the heat About four o’clock in the afiernoon the entire western horizon was banked with clouds, These were piled one upon the other with curling edges, yellow in tinge. ‘A light wind sprang up and sudden dark- ness Came upon the city. This darkness increased until the storm breke. It gave

the streets, at pleasure parks, in light crafts on the Mississipi or at work in the great mercantile establishments. There seemed to be three separate cyclones. They came from the northwest and southwest and west. When they reached the Mise- ; issipi river they had become one. It was a

hurled to destructiox or buried under fall- ing walls. Before the mass of clouds in the west, hanging over the village ‘of Clayton, Ferneridge, Eden and Central, gave vent to their frightful contents, the funnels shot out from them. Some of these seemed to be projected into the air, others leaped to earth, twisting and turning. Lightning played about them, and there wasa marvel lous electrical display. Then came the outburst. Three of the funce's approach- éd St. Lonis, travelling at the eighty miles an hour. From the clouds above strange crackling sounds came. } This filled the air, and at times was stronger than the incessant petals of thun der. of the city, and in thirty minutes were wrecking destruction. So destructive was the cyclone and so irresisistible and eo much greater in magnitude than any other the country has ever known of, that some of the staunchest business blocks went down before it. Iron beams were torn from their tastenings and carried blocks away as if they were feathers.
