MONTREAL. (CR)-The Nation- at Council of Jewish Women of Canada by resolution Tuesday urged the federal government to pass a group libci law as a means of protecting ethnic and religious groups from hatred. contempt or ridicule.

The resolution said the council realizes "the, enormity of race- hatred friction" and supports the principle of group libel iegislat' "framed in such a way as not to interfere with fundamental civil liberties."

Adopted unanimously by the 100 delegates acpa ” , 5.500 coun- cil members from 15 Canadian cit- ies the resolution a id the law "recognizes the digni of man and declares some cases criminally offensive for anyone to trifle with a person's honor and position in so- ciety."

It added that "matter published or uttered without legal justifica- tion or excuse about an ethnic or religious group of Individuals in the Dominion of Canada is likely to expose such group or the indiv- iduals thereof to hatred. t f or ridicule."

In another resolution. also pass- ed unanimously. the council com- plimented the federal government for its handling of the Salk anti- polio vaccine.

Delegates heard Mrs. Willen of New York, president of the Inter- national Council of Jewish Women. describe the work of her organiza- tion which represents Jewish wom- en in 15 countries.

..'The regular monthly meeting of the Georgetown C.W.L. Sub- division was held Tuesday eve- niiig. May 3. in St. James Hall with a large attendance. Mrs. William Murphy, newly elected president. presided. The meeting opened with prayer.by the direc- tor. Rev. 0. Kiggins.

Before the beginning of busi- ness Mrs. Murphy in a few well chosen words expressed her ap- preciation to tht officers and members for the favor conferred on her and promised to do her utmost in carrying out the lead ership of such an important or ganization.

The secretary. Mrs. Howard Llewllyn, then read the minutes of the annual meeting. which w e r e approved. Correspondence followed. was discussed and some was left over until a later date. for further discussing.

Statue Blessed Al Ratio Bay

..'A colourful ceremony took place last Sunday at the Church Of 51- Alexia. Rollo Bay, when a statue of Our Lady of Grace was blessed by Bishop Malcolm Mac- Eachern. The statue is the gift of Mr. John N. Chalsson. a former parishioner, now residing in Bos- ton.

It is of Italian marble and was carved in that country.

The Bishop was welcomed by the pastor, Rev. W. A. Keefe. who also preached the aerrnon. His Excellency made a gracious reply. Solemn Pontifical Benediction was pronounced by the Bishop, as- sisted by the Rev. B. J. Macdon- aid as deacon and the Rev. George Macdonald as sub-deacon. Rev. P. F. MacDonald was master of cere- monies and Rev. Edwin Steele was census bearer.

Other priests present at the ceremony were Msgr. J. A. Mur- phy, Rev. W. V. Macdonald, Rev. W. D. Macdonald and the Rev. L. J. Ayers.

The ceremony began with a pro- cession to the shrine. situated in front of the Church. Appropriate hymns were sung by St. Alexis Choir.

The pastor asked the ladies to do extra work around the sanctuary. taking care of linens, etc. This was readily agreed upon and the ladies prom- ised to attend to a general clean- up on a certain suitable day.
