A. Dangerous Bridge.

Tre reports of the dangerous state of the roads, which appear in the (+pposition prints, must, of course, be received with a very large grain of salt. So far as we can learn, the roads and bridges of the Pro- vince are in a very fair condition. The bridge at the head of Grand River (near Harlow’s Mills) is, however, a notable ex- ception. It isin a highly dangerous con- dition, and should receive the iminediate attention of the Public works Department. A person crossing it, with a skittish horse, after nightfall, could enly escape by a miracle or some special interposition of Providence.

Fatal Cattle Disease in Pictou.

Une Dominion Government has been in- jormed of a fatal cattle disease which pre- vails at Pictou, and Principal McKachern, of the Agricultural Department, has been at Pietou investigating the nature of the disease. He has not yet completed his work, but says that it has a dropsical ten- dency. and in no cases have diseased ammals recovered. It is said to have pre vailed more or jess in the vicinity for 30 years, and it is Dr. McKacliern’s belief that it is caused by improper food and exposure to cold in winter, although the disease does not become fully developed until the fol- lewing summer. About forty head of cattle have died in Pictou during the past year, and while in some cases the farmer has lost, all his horned cattle, his nearest neighbors all have escaped entirely. We are pleased to learn that Principal MeKachern is of opinion that the disease, having risen entir< - entirely from local causes, can in no way endanger the cattle trade of the Dominion.

On Monday evening pleasure of listening to a very eloquent ad- dress delivered by J. H. Bell, M. A., of Ottawa. The subject was the ‘* Art of Public Sp aking.” The lecturer shuwed himself to be a master of the ‘* Art.” The lecture was listened tu by a large and at- tentive audience, who showed their appre- ciation of the remarks made by the learned Fin- lav MeNeill, Esq., occupied the chair. At addresses were made by the chairman, Rev. J. H. Collins and Sen- ator Howlan. <A vote of thanks was ten- lered to Mr. Bell for his very able lecture.

While speaking of the lecture the ques- tion might here be asked very appropriate- ly.—Is it not time that the town autheri- ties were taking some. steps towards pre- veuting a certain class of boys from annoy- ing public entertainments given in this town? ‘There can be no denying the fact that the manner in which they acted dur- ing the delivery of this lecture was a dis- grace to the town of Summerside. The gentleman delivering the lecture can go away from his native Island and say truth- fuliy that the conduct of these boys was truly disgraceful. During the delivery of the lecture he had to stop seme time until the noise had subsided.

Montreal papers report, (and congratu- late the country upon the fact) that Messrs. Lewis Berger & Sons (limited) of London and Shettield, Eng., are manufacturers of celebrated brands of white lead, paints, colors, etc., which sold largely in Canada. Under the new tariff they tind it necessary, in order to retain their Canadian custom, te manufacture their goods in Canada, and they have accordingly erected factories at St. Gabriel’s Locks in Montreal. Their works, which cover two acres of ground and are filled with the best machinery, superin- tended by skilled workmen trained in the firm’s English factories, are now driven to their full capacity, turning out white leads and paints. They give employment to 300 persons. The house has been in business for a century under the same name and the goods are understood to be standard articles.

Ix MremoataM.—Death of one of the best known and most respected residents of Fort Augustus. —Surrounded by her sorrow-stricken family and by friends who had known and loved her from her tenderest years, Mrs, William Dutfy died of erysipelas, at Fort Augustus, on Thursday, the 22nd July inst, she was born at Shore Settlement, Lot 36, March 17th, 1833, so that at the time of her death she was iu her 48th year. Her illness

was of long duration but was borne with patience and christian resignation.

Mrs. Duify was a good Catholic, a beloved mother and a genial friend, During her sick- ness she was frequently inspired by the con- soling visits of the Pastor of her Church, Rev, Allan J. Macdonald, who administered to her the last Sacraments. ‘the high esteem in which she was held by her many friends was shown by the large and respectable funeral train that followed her remains to the parish church where a Solemn Mass of Requiem was offered for her soul. It seems very sad to think that one so good, so patient and so kind, has been hushed in the sleep of death and now lies in the silent tomb. ‘There is one hope, however, to give consolation to her dear hus- band, children and friends, more than that of any earthly cendolence,.it is the hope that her sweet companionship has not beer forever broken ; that when our pilgrimage in life is ended we shall meet again in Heaven never more to part. She lived out her life quietly, peacefully and purely, doing her whole duty as God gave her to know it. Sorrow at such a death is soothed by the thought that this good woman has awakened from the sleep of death to tnat of joy whose fullness is the possession of God, While any language her friends may use falls short of expressing their sentiments, their hearts will ascend with prayers to the Almighty Creator foz her soul’s repose. She has gone frem her friends To the home of the blest, Which our sweet Saviour promised To the ones he loved best. May she rest in peace. M. L.
