In all the excursions to be | planned, could not one be planned from | Montreal to St. John and Halifax, taking in a side trip to P. E. Island and a sail on the magnificent St. John? If such an excur- sion trip was arranged for at cheap fares and brought to the attention of the dis tinguished visitors, we believe a good many would avail themselves of the privilege. Why not try it?”

—The Canadian Pacific Railway have | authorized the contradiction of false rumors concerning them, in the following words, —

‘Rumors are being circulated here (Montreal) in New York, and in London,

that the Canadian Pacific is financially em- barrassed and has had to apply to the Government for assistance; that Mr. Stephen failed in his mission to England, and that he had come back for the purpose of obtaining further aid from the Govern- ment to carry on the work of construction. The whole thing is a pure fabrication, gotten up by the enemies of the Company for political purposes here, and by opponents in New York, in the interests of the other Railways, to whom it is now evident that the Canadian Pacific line is nearly an accomplished fact. Mr. Stephen did not go to England to raise money for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and he has not, nor has any one else, applied to the Govern- ment for further aid. The arrangements made last session are entirely satisfactory and afford ample means to the Company to complete and equip the undertaking by the time stated, May 1886. In fact the latter reports of the engineers demonstrate beyond a doubt that the whole work will be com- pleted far within the estimates on which the loan from the Government was based.’ |

—The prospectus of Sir Leonard} Tilley’s new loan gives general satisfac- | tion. The Montreal remarks | that the point of interest in connection with the loan is the reduction of the rate | of interest to three and a-half per cent. | The issue price, ninety-one, is relatively | better than the current quotation of Canadian four per cents,106,and must be | considered a good stroke of policy on| the part of the Finance Minister.

Much interest is shown in the Cricket and Lawn Tennis matches in Victoria Park to-day. The City Cornet Band is in atten- dance, and there is a large number cf spectators.

Had our correspondent reflected that the otticers of the ship have the same right to admit or refuse admittance to the ship as any private freeman has to admit or refuse admittance to his house, he would not, perhaps, have writien his letter. It may be that those who were admitted were speci- ally favored; but those who were not ad-

| mitted have no right to complain.

Visitors will be admitted on board H. M. S. Canada on Thursday afternoon, between the hours of two and five o’clock. This is a courtesy which will be appreciated.

Western Notes.

We regret to learn that Mr. Artemas Hooper, of Bedeque, got badly hurt by being thrown out of his wagon last week.

While Dr. James Bearisto was rusticat- ing at Malpeque, he received a numerously signed re quisition from the people of Alber- ton and surrounding districts to go back and resume practice among them. After due consideration we understand he has decided to comply with their request.

The following resolution was passed by the Summerside Town Council on the 9th inst :—Whereas, it is expedient to make some provision for the payment of the four debentures issued for school purposes in a manner which will be least burdensome to the ratepayers. ‘Therefore resolved that the board shall each year, on or before the 15th day of July in each year, until the said debentures mature, deposit in the Do- minion Savings Bank, to the credit of the town, asum not less than three hundred dollars which shall be allowed to accumu- late in the way of compound interest until the same mentioned date, when the total amount thus acquired shall be appropriated towards the payment of the. said deben- tures, their falling due, and for no other purposes whatever.
