Panthers Kick Off 96-97 Season

A jumpshot and a goalpost. That was basically all that kept two UPEI Panther teams from claiming AUAA titles six months ago. Who could forget the men’s hockey team and their incredible play offrun under rookie head coach Doug Currie orthe men’s bas- ketball squad who took Dalhousie to double overtime in the final in Halifax.

As the 1996-97 season gets underway, there seems to be a high level of optimism surrounding the fall sports as well

After tearing out of the blocks, the men’s soccer team has struggled as if late but are still in the midst of the play off picture with 2-2-3 record. After dropping a 4-0 decision to Dalhousie last Saturday, the Panthers returned on Sunday and played toa scoreless draw at MacAdam Field with Acadia. The Panthers have been lead offensively thus far by James Johnson who has

scored three goals. The impor- tance of UPEI’s remaining games seems to be magnified as well, because of the parity in the conference. As of Octo-

ber 1, there were seven teams cramped within a five point spread in the AUAA.

Kim Beaton posted a timely shutout last weekend as the UPEI women’s soccer team downed the Dalhousie Tigers 1-0. Sherri Gallant had the lone tally for the Panthers who had to settle for a weekend split on the mainland. Acadia dumped UPEI 3-0 on Sunday.

The win gives UPEI an overall record of 2-5 as of October 1, placing them pre- cariously on the play-off bub- ble. The Panthers sit in sev- enth place, six points behind

St. Mary’s. However because of the time it takes to print this paper things will probably change by the time you read this.

The UPEI women’s field hockey team has stumbled out of the gate getting off to 0-2-2 start. They looked like they would end their three game winless slide last Saturday as they bolted toa2-0 lead against the powerhouse UNB Reds. But the AUAA champs roared back with four unanswered goals before the final whistle.

The Panthers defence has struggled giving upaleague high nine goals but after last weekend UPEI was still only one point out of second place in the three team loop.

Intramural Notes: The IHL (Intramural Hockey League) is setting up for the 1996-1997 season. The dead- line for registration is October 25thor until 16 teamsare filled. The cost is 20 dollars per player or $300 per team. To register, please see the staff at the front desk at the sports centre.
