Florence NicuTincate, the eminent philanthr ipist, now sixty-four years of age, has written a letter from Paris to the New York Hera/d, giving practical advice in view of the rapid spread of cholera. The gist of her letter is contained in one pas- sage :—‘'Vigorously — enforce sanitary measures, but with judgment—e. 4g., scavenge, scavenge, scavenge; wash, cleanse and limewash; remove all putrid human re- fuse from privies and cess pitts, and cess- pools and dustbins; look to stables and cow- | sheds and pigsties; look to common lodging | houses and crowded places, dirty houses and yards. ‘Set your house in order’ in a!) ways sanitary and hygienic, according to the conditions of the place, aud ‘all will be well.”

A verdict in favor of Mrs. Weldon for £1,000 was rendered. The trial took place before Justice Hawkins, of the Court of Queen’s Bench, and a common jury. The defendant was represented by able counsel, but Mrs. Weldon conducted her own case, The trial attracted much attention, and the court was thronged with people during its progress,

Placing a look- ing g'ass on a table he fixed in front of ita gun, loaded and cocked ths trigger, to which he attached a string. Seating himself in a chair in front of the table he placed the muzzle ef the gun against his breast and with each hand placed against his temple a loaded revolver, ‘he string from the gun was fasten- ed to the back of the chair and the plan evidently was to discharge all three weapons at the same time. ‘The gun was not gad ed, but the revolvers were, and the suicide was found dead in the chair.

Tue people of Sussex, N. B,, are agitating for a new Baptist Seminary. At a meeting held on the evening of the 28th inst., between $5,000 and 36,000 were subscribed. A com- mittee was appointed to solicit subscriptions to-morrow aod next day and no doubt $10,- 000 will be subscribed. A committee was also struck to ascertain the cost of suitable sits and other particulars. The people are be- coming saicond to their interests and will subscribe liberally irrespective of denomin- ational beliefs.

I must preface the brief address which, only, on this occasion J deem it requisite to trouble you with. by a few remarks on a su» ject that has been a good deal discussed since the election bas been talked of. Certain par- ties have urged the necessity of calling a Convention, and assumed that I am opposed to such astep, This is not correct. I shall be ever ready to accept the decision ef a Convention when the voice of the County demands one; but I wish it to be understood that while I am willing, unhesitatingly, to defer to the voice of the tLleetors, I distinctly decline to submit to the dictation of a self- appointed clique of wire-pullers, whoimagine that they are the Liberal Conservative Party. The unanimous and hbeariy entorsaticn which my nomination received to-day at the large representative meeting of gentlemen from all parts of the County, including the delegates to the convention heli at the last Election, is, 1 think, sufficient to justify the course I have pursued.

Having been so lately before you, my views on political subjects are known to you; suffice it to say, no change has taken place in my Opinions since that time. The sabject of teciprocity has, however, become prominent of late, and as it isa question of the deepest interest to our people, I cannot pass it over in silence, There are serious Cifficulties in the way of our obtaiming this very desirable change in our trade regulations ; we have to deal with a shrewd and clear-headed people, who are renowned for the astuieness for which they look after their own interests. toyou?’ This was, in eflect, the reply tothe delegation. Under the National Policy they are de-

prived of our trade, and begin to find that it was of some vaiue to them, and now there is a feeling arising in the States for more unre- stricted trade with the countries of North and South America. If indiscreet and bab- bling politicians would only have the wisdom to act upon the excellent adage, “ Silence is golden,” we should be more likely to succeed in securing an advantageous treaty

The present Government fully appreciate the benefits which would accrue from a free interchange of natural products of the two countries, and will make every effort to bring about this desirable object, but the attempt must be made wisely and judicicusly; bla- tantly proclaiming to a!] the wo'ld that reci- procity is @ vilal necessity to us, and that we cannot do without it, is not only untrue, but is likely to defeat our aim, Yon may rest assured that my best endeavors will be used to aid in bringing about this beneficial change, a8 Iam fully aware of the special benefits it will bring to this Province.

That the policy of Sir John Macdonald’s Government in opening up and settling the great territory of the North West, by means of the Canada Pacific Railway, is wise ard statesmanlike, has been proved by ita success, and the converting of an unknown wilderness into a fertile, food-producing country, shows far-sighied administrative ability, and de- mands the gratitude not only of Canada but of the world,

While heartily endorsing the policy of the Gevernment in the North West, I consider our Jittle Province has been somewhat over- looked For this the Government is not wholly to blame; all governments are prone to defer action in any matter that is not per- sistently urged upon them, I think our peo- ple have been backward in asserting their claims, and I trust in future to tind them making energetic and untiring efforts to secure their rights

Shouid I have the honor of being elected to represent this intelligent and independent constituency, of which there is little doubt, my most earnest endeavors will be used to obtain for Prince Edward Island a full recog- nition of her just claims under Confederation.

Also } of that undivided tract, piece and parcel of land, situate, lying end being in Charlottetown, in Queen's County, in Prince Edward Island, and knows and distinguished as the weet f. urth part of Town Lot Number 4\,in the first hundred of Town Lots in Charlotietown, aforesaid, the said wert fourth part of said Town Lot being bounded on the vrorth by Dorchester Street, on the east by the north fourth part {said Lown Lot, on the south by the svuth tourth art of the same Town Lot, and on the west by ‘Town Lot Number 40, in the said first hundred of Town Lots in Cha: lottetown, aforesaid, to- gether with all the houser, buildings, rights, privileges, casements, advantages and appur- tenances whatsoever to the said above two last mentioned tracts of land belonging, or in anywise appertaining. ‘The said last two plots of land, as ebove described, being held by the said insolvent Banking Company under and by virtue ofa certain Indenture ot Mortgage, bearing date 15th day of De- cember, 1881, and made between William Crilley Bourke, now deceased, of the one part, and the President, Directors and Com- pany of the said insolvent Banking Com- pony, of the other part, and now due and un- satistied, and under and by virtue of the power of sale in said Mortgage contained. The said last described two several tracts of jand will be sold together or in parcels, as p:r conditions of sale.

4. The Liquidators will also sell, at the Court House in Charlottetown, on Friday, the 29th day of August, at the same hour, one Lot of land formerly be longing to the Ardgowan Estate, and bound- ed as follows: On the north and south by road each leading from the Mount Edwara Road to the St, Peter’s Road; on the east by land in the possession of Rev. Dr. Fitz- gerald ; on the west by jand in the possession of Donald Farquharson, and containing one aud one q‘arier acre, a little more or less.
