‘A woman!"’ cried Higgins. ‘‘Oh, yes! the mysterious woman who wanted the manager, ho doubt.’’

‘‘But why don’t you go and see?’’ said I, impatiently.

“Cos I ain’t fond of interfering with other folks’ quarrels. ‘OweverI don't mind going back with you.’’ As we returned I was alarmed to hear no sound from the attic. A horrible fear flashed | over me, But just as we turned a corner we heard light footsteps hurrying toward us, and came face to face with the strange woman. I uttered a cry of relief at sight of her, but she rushed on with only a hasty glance in my direction.

Higgins, however, was not so easily satisfied. ‘‘Hello!’ he cried, ‘‘Stop, miss, I want to know sommet about this.’

sight of his face. He ran down stairs. I think he had heard me, though he did not look ‘round. I had ne time to lose.

I flew down the stairs, caught him within half a dozen steps of the hottom and clung, leech-iike, to him as he tried to shake me off. If it had not been for Higgins’ presence he would have flung me over the iron bannisters, We were within three steps of the ground. ‘‘ Your light! Show your light!’ I shrieked to Higgins.

Higgins complied. He turned the light full in the man’s face.

For one moment I stared at the drawn features, the wild eyes of a creature that looked more like a wild beast than a man, the next my arms fell to my sides as I let him go.

For it was the face of a man I had never seen before.

CHAPTER XL

When I recovered consciousness (I sup- pose I must have fainted), I found Hig gins staring at me out of the corners of his eyes. For some moments he contin- ued to gaze, and then bluntly asked:—

“‘And who the dickens are you?’’

There was no further use in conceal- ing my identity.

“T was a schoolfellow of Miss Clarke's, and her dearest friend. And now, Hig- gins, where are those two people?’’

**Gone, miss-——gone.”’

“Well, I shall bring Mr. Jones here to-morrow and have things put right.’’ Higgins looked at me with something

» consternation on his face.

“Mr. William Jones, that is, ain't it?’’ he said, dubiously. ‘‘I don’t know him. He’s never been down here since I've been here. Well, if anything's wrong, it’s no fault of mine. But as for it's heing the man you saw here to- night, that’s allin my eye, for he’s a Government detective sent to keep his eye on the brewing.’’

He brought this explanation out trium- phantly, and, as Harry Jones would say, it was a ‘‘staggerer’’ to me.

‘“‘Are you quite sure he’s a detective— that man I saw?’’ I asked.

“As sure as my name's ‘Iggina, that's all. Why,he's been on this lay for weeks."’

“And the woman? Who is she?"’

“I don’t know. He’s been after her man, it seems, and she’s following him to try and bribe him off.”

‘‘That’s not what she said,’’ observed I, doubtfully.

“Of course not. you're ready I'll said, bluntly.

Henry, who never took a snub, pressed my fingers effusively.

**Lioyd couldn't stand being insulted,’’ he said. ‘‘I can, so he’s waiting for me at the bridge. Suppose we take a stroll round the garden, as I m noé considered good enough to come !ndoors.”’

His qaiet assurance surprised me.

“Come, it’s too hot to stay out here in the sun,”’ he said, coolly. ‘‘ Besides, I like trees.’’

‘But you can't stay here, when Alice won't allow you into the house.’”’

“‘The very reason why I should stay in the garden. Why should I he so par- ticular about the orders of a crazy gir), who is keeping me out of the property which will be mine some day?’

I was appalled by this brutal frank- ness.

‘‘Have you no heart, no sense of de- cency?’’ I panted out.

“IT hope I have a_ little of both,’’ he said, quietly, ‘‘but not enough to make a hypocrite of me, I have no sympathy ror a girl who loses her wits, especially when she treats my friend bacly, and when her insanity will help me to a for- tune."’

‘‘A pretty pair, you and your friend!’’ I burst out. ‘‘All you both care abont is the poor girl's money. You might have the decency to stay away from the place.’’

“Perhaps, I would, if you weren’t here,’’ he said, quietly, knocking an apple off a tree.

‘Don’t mention me, sir, in the same breath with—with—with anything in fact. I would have nothing to do with so heartless a wretch, even if you were an emperor.’’

‘Quite right,’’ said Henry, ‘‘you’d be always wanting to go down into the kit- chen to see whether the cook’s ways were clean."’

‘*Egbert met you coming down here, and I guessed you would be quixotic enough to stay.’"

We had strolled siowly toward the wire bridge, when suddenly we saw & woman walking close under the shadow of the wall; her back toward us, and Henry’s eyes glanced at her with no sign of re- cognition.

‘*There’s Egbert,’’ he said.

I followed his glance and saw Alice's fiance leaning tnoodily against the sice of the bridge. Suddenly, however, as we looked, a great change came over him. He sprang up, alert and eager, gazing out before him, with a face full of in- terest. Then he ran back off the bridge at a great rate. ‘lhe next glimpse we caught of him showed us his figure get- ting over the garden wall. A few more ateps and he was on the path below us, walking very quickly with a flushed face. I watched him breathlessly, Henry curiously. He was in pursuit of the wom- an. She turned at the sound of his footsteps and held ont her hand with a smile, and they walked on together, talking earnestly.

‘‘Henry,’’ I said, ‘‘who is that woman?’’

‘‘I—I don’t know,’’ he said, shortly,

Sculpture in the Sana.

A favorite form of civersion this year with some of the visitors on the beach at Coney Island has been to fashion imi- tations of the human body in the damp sand. These imitations have usually taken the shape of the female form, and some of them have been fairly well done. Recumbent figures, as if in deep sleep, are the favorite subjects.
